Every once in a while, there comes a movie that surprises audiences and critics alike. One such movie, titled The Sheep Detectives, recently hit the big screen. It seemingly came out of nowhere and has been creating a lot of buzz. Both critics and audiences have been declaring how great it is. Let’s take a look to see if it’s truly worth the praise it’s been receiving.
The Good
The Sheep Detectives is a mystery movie, and the actual mystery at hand is handled spectacularly. It’s always welcome when a mystery story offers an actually good mystery. It’s a ton of fun to play along with and to try to solve the case along with the movie. There are clues and hints that feel organic to the story and allow for the audience to piece it all together, but it’s also a genuine surprise when everything is revealed.
This movie has heart in spades. It’s almost impossible to feel for these characters, both sheep and humans, as the story progresses and we see their lives play out. There’s a slew of moments so touching that they can make any audience member tear up. It’s a touching story filled with sad, hopeful, and heartwarming scenes.
It’s also hilarious. The jokes are witty, ranging from clever dialogue to wacky slapstick. Some of the humor is surprisingly dark, which leads to some of the biggest laughs. None of the humor takes away from the sad moments, as it’s all well-balanced. If you’re looking for good laughs and a good cry, this film serves as both.

Many of the characters in the movie, both sheep and humans, are a delight to see throughout. Lily, Sebastian, Mopple, Officer Tim Derry, and others are extremely memorable and well-written. They’re each fleshed out, interesting, and worth getting attached to. It’s hard not to relate to them on some level.
The story sets up the rules of the sheep world quite well. There are elements, like how they’re able to forget things on a whim and how they view Winter Sheep, that they explain and explore fantastically. It all allows for the audience to understand how the sheep see the world and what they’re capable of. It all serves as great foreshadowing when these things need to come up again.
Of course, there are plenty of adorable sheep in this movie. They’re all adorable and easily distinguished from each other. They look like the perfect mixture of cartoon characters and realistic sheep. This is due to some incredible visual effects.

The Bad
There are a lot of sheep introduced early on, but many of them don’t do much of anything important or help out with the mystery. The main few do, and there’s a pair who eventually help out at the very end, but the rest are mostly there for occasional fun dialogue and do fill out the flock. With them being introduced along with the main characters and even being voiced by big name celebrities, one would think they’d be included more in the central plot or at least have a bigger impact on the mystery. It feels weird that their impact is so minimal.
One of those many sheep’s entire personality is that they ask questions. These questions don’t help with the mystery or drive plot or even lead to laughs. They’re mostly just annoying. The movie could have done without them, or at least make their questions important to what’s going on.
While the CGI for the sheep is usually fantastic, it’s not super consistent throughout. There are times when the sheep look more cartoonish and others when they look real. It’s far from a terrible flaw, but this inconsistency is noticeable enough at times to break some of the immersion.
Conclusion
The Sheep Detectives is a brilliant mystery tale that will make audiences of all kinds laugh and cry as they play along while solving the mystery for themselves. It’s not the type of movie you get to see all that often, but it’s an absolute gem when it does get made. It’s charming in all the best ways, and is a must-see for everyone.
