The Nintendo Wii was a rather fun console. Sure, the motion controls were a little too gimmicky at times, but it worked quite well for plenty of video games. One game duology it was absolutely perfect for was Red Steel.
Both games in the short-lived series focused on using guns and swords, changing how the Wii remote’s motion controls worked when needed. Point the Wii remote at the screen to aim with the gun, wield it upright like a sword to slash at enemies. They were exactly what a lot of folks were asking for when it was announced that Nintendo’s next console was going to focus on using motion controls.
However, unfortunately, these games aren’t talked about a whole lot. Sure, they’re old now, but there are plenty of Wii games that still get attention from gamers. Why not these ones? If there are Wii games worth still talking about, Red Steel deserves to be on that list.
Both Red Steel games are a ton of fun. The first one has you taking on mobster samurai, putting you in what feels like an early version of the world of John Wick. The second game, which is more of a spiritual successor than a sequel despite being titled Red Steel 2, put you in the role of a cowboy in the wild west who happens to be skilled with both guns and blades. The stories of each were surprisingly intriguing, the aesthetic of both were cool, and the gameplay was exhilarating.
The gunplay was pretty fun, and was even occasionally used to solve some puzzles. The sword fighting, though, was especially tremendous. Every time the metal clashed against another blade, the player could truly feel it. They were easily some of the most immersive games on the Wii, and they were definitely some of the best uses of motion controls in gaming history.

It was honestly pretty impressive how great the motion controls were. They were both satisfying and precise. Sure, motion controls are still used today, mostly with some Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games and with VR, but it’s surprising they’re not still as much of a core part of gaming with the likes of Red Steel out there. Most of today’s motion controlled games aren’t nearly as cool.
Who knows? Maybe there will be a return to Red Steel of sorts eventually, or at least something really similar to it. Until then, the gaming community really should be talking about the awesomeness that is Red Steel way more.
