Back in the 90s and early 2000s, when comedy TV was perhaps at its edgiest, there was one show that pushed the envelope almost as much as South Park and other adult animated series. That TV show was Celebrity Deathmatch. Celebrity Deathmatch was a stop-motion claymation series that used clay models of celebrities who were popular at the time to parody them and make them duke it out to the death. It featured match-ups like Hansen vs. the Spice Girls, Howard Stern vs. Kathie Lee Gifford, and Arnold Schwarzenegger vs. Sylvester Stallone, and it was always both hilarious and action-packed.
It was heavy on the adult humor, claymation gore, and pop culture references, and it was so popular that it even received a video game adaptation among other merchandise. Like most things, it came to an end. It was cancelled due to high production costs and MTV, the network it aired on, losing interest in animation. There was a revival announced in 2018, but nothing came of it all these years later, which is hugely disappointing.
Now is the perfect time to bring the series back. For one, nostalgia and reboots are still very much still popular. Disney’s live action remakes continue to make money (for some reason), and it seems like every TV show, like Malcolm in the Middle, King of the Hill, and That 70’s Show, have been getting continuations. So, why not do the same with Celebrity Deathmatch? The nostalgia is certainly there for a lot of folks.
While it’s definitely a show that’s worth a re-binge, it’s certainly dated. It focuses on celebrities and parodying pop culture from the 90s and 2000s. That’s exactly why it’s overdue for a revisit. The world of celebrities and pop culture have changed over the years. There are now new celebrities to make fun of and new pop culture to reference. Imagine Sabrina Carpenter battling it out against Olivia Rodrigo, or Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Evans, and Chris Pratt in a four-wary free-for-all Chris match to crown the one true Chris. Honestly, the possibilities are endless.

A return for Celebrity Deathmatch would bring streaming views to the original series, which would be a huge plus for Paramount. That being said, as opposed to other TV shows getting rebooted, this is one that audiences could jump blindly into without ever seeing the original run. Every episode is its own standalone experience. Not everything needs to be rebooted or revisited, but this one would be a lot of fun.
Hopefully it does somehow return one day. The people need to see stop-motion clay figures of Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet fighting to the death.
