Everything Set Up By ‘Superman’

As the start of a new shared movie universe, Superman was tasked with setting up potential future films and TV series. There were a handful of stories and characters who were introduced, hinted at, or built up throughout this new Superman movie, so let’s take a look at each one.

Warning: Spoilers for Superman are ahead.

Supergirl

Starting with the most obvious, this movie gives us our first look at the DCU’s Supergirl. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise since the Supergirl movie is set to be one of the next projects in the DCU and has already started filming. Still, it’s good to see her in this movie, even for a brief moment, and her interaction with her cousin is a lot of fun. Her cameo also sets up the possibility that Krypto will appear in her movie too, which is especially exciting.

The Authority

After her battle against Superman, the Engineer is taken down but is still alive and breathing. She’s then not really seen at the end of the movie, meaning she’s still out there somewhere. The team she’s on in the comic, the Authority, are set to have their own movie in the DCU, and this is likely teasing that. It makes one wonder if we’ll see other members of the Authority in movies or TV series before the team comes together on the big screen.

Bizarro

One of the villains Superman fights in the movie is a clone of himself created by Lex Luthor. He’s not quite Bizarro, but that is essentially how Bizarro came to be in the comic books. That being said, this clone does seem dimwitted if he only acts based on what he’s told, and he is sucked into a black hole at the end. Perhaps wherever he ended up will make him more Bizarro-like. This could be a great way to set up the villain of one of the next movies.

The Justice Gang and Related Characters

A team of superheroes known as the Justice Gang plays a major role in Superman. Their inclusion sets up a lot of potential for the DCU, like Guy Gardner being the introduction to the Green Lanterns in this universe. Perhaps we’ll get to see more of them as a group or on their own as individual heroes. In the comics, Mr. Terrific leads a team called The Terrifics that also features Metamorpho, so there’s a chance to see that come to life. The Justice Gang seems to have been put together by Maxwell Lord, so this could easily be leading into the creation of Justice League International or other stories that his character has played a role in.

Simon Stagg

Simon Stagg, an infamous business man and supervillain, is referenced throughout the film. The Stagg Enterprises building is prominently seen in one scene, and there’s an entire newspaper article about him in the background of another. Plus, he’s responsible for turning Rex Mason into Metamorpho, who’s a major character in the movie. Perhaps we’ll actually get to see him in this universe at some point and be a villain to Metamorpho.

Lex Luthor’s Warsuit

Something that fans have wanted to see on the big screen in live action for quite some time is Lex Luthor in his Warsuit. In Superman, his henchmen known as “the Raptors” wear something that vaguely looks like Lex’s Warsuit. If he just souped them up a bit and made the colors more distinguishable, they’d basically be the Warsuit. Are these the only versions of the Warsuit we’ll see in the DCU? Hopefully not, but only time will tell.

Batman

In a blink-and-you-miss-it shot, a highway sign that reads “Gotham City” can be seen. This is a nice nod to the home of Bruce Wayne and is mostly there to fully set this movie in the DC Universe, but it’s also safe to say that Batman will be in the DCU, with this being the first hint to him. It’s a small hint, but it’s enough to tease Batman fans dying to see this new take on the character.
