It’s hard to deny that the excitement for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is building as its release grows near. Paramount Pictures has been revealing more and more looks at the film with more social media ads, TV spots, character posters, and now a second trailer. This new trailer doesn’t reveal a whole lot that wasn’t already seen in the first one, but it does give us better looks at some scenes as well as give the audience more of an idea of the movie’s tone. Let’s take a look at the second trailer to see what details it does have to offer.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Official Trailer 2
Closer Look at Chao Garden
The first trailer gave us a brief glimpse at the movie’s version of Chao Garden, which was one of the most popular elements of the Sonic Adventure 2 video game. Here, we get to see much more of the scene. It’s clear that Chao Garden in this world is essentially a Chuck E. Cheese parody with people in big mascot suits instead of a magical place with real Chao. There are even cute songs they sing and customers wearing hats with balls mounted on top.
It makes one wonder if they’ll eventually incorporate the actual Chao creatures somehow, especially if Cream the Rabbit ever makes her live action debut. Perhaps the Chaos Emeralds will choose these bizarre children’s mascots as the form of their protectors, or maybe this Chuck E. Cheese type place is inspired by the alien lifeforms somehow.
Space Colony ARK
This trailer also gives a much better look at the Space Colony ARK. It’s the secret government base that Shadow the Hedgehog was created on, as well as a weapon capable of destroying worlds. We see it used to destroy part of the moon, which is a direct reference to a scene in Sonic Adventure 2. It’s also made evident by the trailer that both Robotniks will be spending a lot of time on the ARK, which could open up the possibility for a lot of lore to be explored there.
It’s worth noting that the exterior does appear different, as it does not resemble Eggman’s face like in the game. This is likely due to the popular meme videos poking fun at what else it looked like in the games. Either way, it looks to be serving the same functions as in the video game.

Rachel in G.U.N.
It appears that Rachel is now a member of G.U.N., which is a pretty hilarious development. It also means two things. One is that she and Randall are still together despite their wedding in the second film being fake. The other is that the human characters will now be part of the main plot, instead of having their own subplot that interrupts what the video game characters are up to. The humans going along for the ride with the video game characters will be a huge improvement on one of the biggest complaints the series has.
Accurate Dr. Eggman Attire
Jim Carrey is finally in source material accurate attire, and it only took three movies to get there. His coat is exactly what Dr. Eggman wears in most of the games, even including the white straps and gold buckles. It looks absolutely awesome. It’s nice to see how much they’re recreating elements from the video games and giving long-time fans something to celebrate.
Agent Stone’s Second Thoughts
In a couple of particularly interesting shots in the trailer, it appears that Agent Stone may be questioning his alliance to Robotnik. In one scene, he’s seen reacting to the villain team’s plan, and clearly doesn’t like it, saying “that’s dark…” In another part of the trailer, Stone is seen standing in rubble among other civilians, looking somber. It seems as though he’s choosing Earth’s safety rather than wanting to see it destroyed.
Tails’ Jetpack
While flying alongside his friends, Tails whips out a jetpack and zooms through the sky. He obviously doesn’t need it to fly, but it makes sense to use in order to keep up with the likes of the fastest hedgehog around. It’s always fun seeing what sorts of gadgets Tails has with him. It may not mirror anything from the games, but it still feels authentic to the character. With elements like this and Knuckles using his digging ability, it’s clear that they’re ensuring to keep everything as authentic to the source material as possible.
Embracing Maria’s Demise and Darker Tones
Something that many fans feared was that the filmmakers would hold back from the darker elements of Shadow’s backstory. This trailer feels like it was mainly created to show those fans that they have nothing to worry about. It’s clear that they’re embracing Maria’s fate and the necessary darker tones that come with adapting this story. This is confirmed by shots like a devastated Shadow with his palm to the shattered encasing.

Music References
Like with both of the previous movies, it certainly sounds like there will be music that references the music from the games. This trailer’s orchestrated music is a play on “His World” from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, so it seems like there won’t just be Sonic Adventure 2 references throughout the film. There’s also a point when Tom tells Sonic to “listen to your heart.” “Listen to Your Heart” is a song from the Sonic Underground animated series, and the lyrics match up somewhat to the rest of Tom’s speech to Sonic in the trailer. This could be a coincidence, as it is rather generic advice, but there is a chance it’s an intended reference.
Shadow’s Gun
Shadow has his gun and motorcycle. These are both things that he had in his own game Shadow the Hedgehog, so it’s nice to see them. There was speculation and concern that he might not have his gun because it’s a little darker and more adult than the rest of the franchise, but fans can be at ease. Even if it’s just a laser beam, it’s cool that he has it. He technically doesn’t need a gun or motorcycle since he’s stronger than any gun and faster than any motorcycle, but they’re both really cool and fit the character’s personality.
Robotnik Christmas
The trailer ends with a bizarre scene that has Jim Carrey’s Ivo Robotnik in Christmas pajamas sneaking into a living room to see his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, dressed as Santa Claus. He gives his grandfather a tackling hug and the two fall into the Christmas tree. Is this some sort of bonkers flashback even though they don’t look any younger? How does this fit into the rest of the story whatsoever? Only time will tell, I guess.
