Where Can Ghostbusters Go After ‘Frozen Empire’?

The latest Ghostbusters film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set up several possible futures for the franchise. It’s still currently unknown which directions will actually be taken, but each one offers a lot of potential for this fan-favorite movie series. Let’s take a look at some of the places where Ghostbusters can go next.

Spoiler warning for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Researching Ghosts

Frozen Empire introduces the Paranormal Research Center set up by Winston to study ghosts. The goal is to figure out how ghosts actually work instead of just capturing them and doing away with them. They can successfully stop them from wreaking havoc, but it’s time they start looking into why they stay in the land of the living, why they cause so much trouble, why there are different types, and why they’re able to do what they do.

This opens up the door to expand on the lore that’s already been set up previously by giving more explanations to everything. It can also allow for more ghosts to feel like actual characters rather than just plot devices as they’re being studied. A movie or TV series taking place in the research center with wacky ghost characters being studied and run through tests could be an entertaining watch that changes up the pre-established Ghostbusters formula.

Helping Ghosts Instead of Catching Them

A subplot of Frozen Empire has Phoebe befriending a ghost girl and eventually helping her complete her “unfinished business” and move on. Up until now, the Ghostbusters have just shoved any ghost they come across into the trap, emptied it into the containment unit, and called it a day. The idea that there are some ghosts that don’t need to be captured and can be talked to and helped out is an interesting one.

There have been TV series that have used this idea in the past, but seeing it more in the Ghostbusters universe would provide something unique. This is another way future installments can shake up the usual formula a bit.

Past Ghosts Are Free Again

Garraka essentially empties the containment unit in the firehouse. This means that decades’ worth of ghosts have been set free. Thankfully, the big bads like Gozer and Vigo were defeated by other means, but that’s still an awful lot of ghosts flying around and causing trouble. It looks like the Spenglers and their friends have a lot of work ahead of them.

New York City now has more of a reason to keep the Ghostbusters around more than ever. It’s safe to say we’ll likely be seeing them recapturing all those ghosts over time. This does also allow for ghosts from previous movies, like the Scoleri Brothers, to rear their heads on screen once again.

New Locations

It’s clearly seen that Winston has been expanding the Ghostbusters after becoming a business mogul. He has a whole engineering team, a new research facility, and plenty of new gadgets and vehicles. Ghosts wouldn’t just be in New York City, as we’ve seen in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It might be time to expand further to new locations.

Having multiple TV series focusing on characters working at various Ghostbusting stations around the country or the world could be fun to see. If CSI can span spin-offs like CSI: Miami and CSI: Vegas, and NCIS can do the same thing, then so can Ghostbusters. We’ve already seen a lot of New York City; it’s time that we get to see Ghostbusters: Los Angeles, Ghostbusters: London, or Ghotbusters: Boston. Maybe something like a Winston cameo in an episode can help tie things together more.

Newbies Completely Taking Over

In Frozen Empire, Winston and Ray have a few conversations regarding them being a little old to be a part of the action. Even if they’re still around with Ray running his occult bookshop and Winston running the business side of the Ghostbusters, it might be for the best to lead the actual Ghostbusting up to the newer characters. The torch has been properly and respectfully passed, so whatever comes next will likely focus a bit more on the Spengler family and their friends.
