‘LEGO Dimensions’ Deserved a Third Set

LEGO Dimensions was an action-adventure game in which the playable characters were LEGO versions of popular characters, like Batman, Gandalf, and even Homer Simpson. Even more exciting was that characters, vehicles, and certain items were built with real-life LEGOs and then activated to play as or use in-game similarly to Nintendo’s Amiibo figures of Skylanders. Collectible LEGO figures that allowed you to use those characters in a video game was an especially great idea that led to a lot of fun.

After the game’s initial release, a second set of LEGO Dimensions was made, allowing fans to collect and build more LEGO figures, play as new characters, and explore new worlds. This second set included the likes of Gizmo and Stripe from Gremlins, E.T., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Finn and Jake from Adventure Time. There were plenty of iconic characters crossing over from the get-go, and even more fan-favorites were added with the second set. Needless to say, fans were excited for who they’d be able to collect and play as in future sets.

A third set was never made, unfortunately. After the second set, the game was discontinued despite the following set supposedly being in development. Overall, the toys-to-life concept (outside of Amiibo) was not as profitable as companies had hoped and the idea is a fading one. It was likely rather costly to have both the game and the figures made. That being said, LEGO Dimensions was an absolute blast and deserves a third set, and even more after that.

Not only was LEGO Dimensions endlessly entertaining, but it was also an extremely creative game that was unique from anything else out there. It was a riveting time whether you played single player or multiplayer. It’s hard for fans not to wonder what could have been with the game’s now-lost future.

If a third set was made, there are so many possibilities as to what IPs they could have added to the game. Where the game was made by Warner Bros. and focused heavily on WB’s properties, the likes of Looney Tunes, The Matrix, and Animaniacs wouldn’t be too farfetched to see. Since Finn and Jake were playable, other Cartoon Network series wouldn’t have been a surprise to see either

Since third party characters like the Ghosbusters and Chell from Portal were playable, more non-Warner Bros. franchises could fit in as well. Minecraft LEGO sets came out just a couple years before LEGO Dimensions, so it would have been reasonable to be able to explore the world of Minecraft, play as Steve, and battle Creepers. The LEGO Batman Movie featured LEGO versions of characters from Doctor Who, The Wizard of Oz, The Lord of the Rings, and more, most of which found their way into LEGO Dimensions. One of the villains who escaped the Phantom Zone in The LEGO Batman Movie was the shark from Jaws. This somehow being worked into LEGO Dimensions would have been a riot.

Before the cancellation, fans had high hopes and enjoyed speculating over what worlds they’d be able to explore in the future. None of what they had hoped for or speculated about will be happening, sadly. The game is still incredibly fun to revisit, but it’s disappointing that there will never be a third set for everyone to enjoy.
