Whether it be with movies, video games, TV shows, books, or something else, media has a spectrum of quality. It’s all opinion, as art is subjective, but in the minds of an audience, a piece of media can be an incredible masterpiece, great, pretty good, just okay, mediocre, bad, terrible, and a slew of other adjectives in between.
However, gone are the ways of movies or games or anything else being just “okay” or “not bad” or “fun enough.” Now, it’s as if something is either the greatest of all time or it’s unenjoyable garbage with absolutely no in-between. That’s the way it seems looking at social media posts and online reviews, anyway. A 6/10 or 7/10 from a lot of reviewers and social media creators is now considered negative even though it’s not bad at all. Even the slang term “mid,” which was meant to be used to mean “in the middle,” is used more often to be derogatory toward something.
The idea that a piece of media must be awful just because it’s not completely perfect simply isn’t true. People look back at movies that were dumb fun like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze and 1995’s Mortal Kombat and enjoy them for what they are despite their flaws. They may have weird logic or goofy moments or lack any mind-blowing themes, but they will always be entertaining. If a movie that had those same flaws and ridiculousness came out nowadays, it would be one of the most hated and critically-panned films of all time. It would all be because it’s not the newest high bar for perfection.

This bizarre and toxic way of thinking is harmful to both the respective piece of media and to the community around it. The media isn’t as appreciated as it should be and, thanks to negative word of mouth, isn’t experienced by as wide of an audience as it could be. As for the community, it causes negativity to spread via bickering, yelling, and insults. It makes people feel unwelcome or left out for enjoying something. Who wants to feel discouraged for enjoying something?
Let’s all go back to appreciating things that are fun or entertaining even if they’re far from perfect. Those dumb flaws don’t hurt us, so let’s just enjoy something. It doesn’t have to be perfect or revolutionary. If you don’t like something, it’s okay, but let others enjoy it. Just because a movie or book or video game is “pretty decent,” it doesn’t make it offensively bad.
