The Best Animal Superheroes

There are seemingly countless superheroes out there in the world of entertainment. Between comic books, movies, TV series, and video games, all from over the course of several decades, there are more superheroes than most folks could name. That being said, most of these super-powered saviors are either humans or humanoid aliens. There are plenty of animal superheroes who dish out just as much justice as their humanoid counterparts, but don’t always get the same amount of recognition. To shed some light on these crime-fighting critters, let’s look at some of the best ones below.

Lockjaw

As the loyal protector of the Inhuman royal family, Lockjaw is able to teleport himself and others to any destination on Earth or the moon, as well as open passages between dimensions. He’s a massive, slobbery bulldog and a very good boy.

Atom Ant

Created by Hanna-Barbera, this cartoon ant fought crime with his super strength, super speed, and flight. Atom Ant’s powers may have been far from original, but he served as a parody for other popular superheroes and was quite entertaining to watch. Plus, something as tiny as an ant having the strength of Superman is hilarious.

Underdog

Another classic cartoon character who parodied popular heroes was Underdog. His powers are inconsistent throughout the series, but he’s shockingly overpowered. Underdog has the powers of Superman, but also atomic breath, a super bark, and is surprisingly intelligent. He’s adorable and fun to watch. So much so that he even received his own live action film in 2007.

Mighty Mouse

Mighty Mouse made his debut in a series of animated short films in the 40s and was popular enough to star in his own animated series in the 50s and eventually his own comic book run. He’s another classic cartoon character with the stereotypical powers of flight, strength, and x-ray vision. However, he has occasionally demonstrated super-hypnosis that allows him to control inanimate objects and even turn back time. He may be small, but he sure is tough.

Spider-Ham

Many folks became familiar with Peter Porker, a.k.a. Spider-Ham due to his inclusion in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. However, he’s been appearing in comic books since the 80s. His universe is filled with animal versions of other popular Marvel characters, which is a fun idea. However, what makes Spider-Ham particularly entertaining is that he’s essentially Spider-Man mixed with the Looney Tunes. Spidey powers with giant mallets is a hilarious combination that proves to be surprisingly effective against crime.

Howard the Duck

Howard the Duck is easily one of Marvel’s wackiest characters. He’s a wise-cracking, fourth wall breaking duck alien from Duckworld. He doesn’t have superpowers, but he’s proficient in the martial art known as Quack-Fu. He’s leapt from the pages of the comics to star in his own live action film and appear a handful of times in the MCU, so despite his ridiculousness, someone over at Marvel really likes writing him.

Duck Dodgers

Another duck superhero, but this one is the superhero persona of none other than Daffy Duck. He’s a space hero made to parody the iconic Buck Rogers in Looney Tunes fashion. He uses a variety of gadgets and vehicles, as well as martial arts prowess and plenty of luck to save the galaxy from Marvin the Martian and a slew of other alien threats. Seeing Daffy in this niche role is genuinely exciting regardless if you’re a Looney Tunes fan or not.

Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew

Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew are a particularly wacky team of animal superheroes created by DC Comics. A super strong rabbit leading a team composed of a cat with a magic wand, a pig made of living steel, a stretchy duck, a poodle who could repel and attract objects, a super fast turtle, and a mouse who could shrink is absolutely bonkers, but in a fun way. Their own comic run was short-lived back in the day, but they’ve made appearances here and there over the years thanks to the existence of the multiverse.

Detective Chimp

The name says it all. He’s a chimp who’s a detective. He even dresses like Sherlock Holmes. In the pages of DC Comics, he has helped the members of Justice League Dark on a number of occasions, as well as other teams like the Legion of Super-Pets and even the Justice League. He’s one of the most skilled investigators in the world, which is rather impressive for a chimp.

Devil Dinosaur

Devil Dinosaur is easily the entry on this list with the coolest name. Created by Marvel Comics, he’s exactly as his name suggests; he’s a giant, crimson tyrannosaurus rex with savage carnivorous tendencies, as well as being extremely durable and strong. Let’s not forget his intelligence is on par with a human’s. He’s able to switch bodies with Moon Girl, and putting her big brains in his mighty body makes for something truly unstoppable.

Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon, who has gained quite a bit of popularity thanks to his MCU counterpart seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, is a highly intelligent raccoon, skilled marksman, and weapons specialist. He’s a vital member of the Guardians of the Galaxy and has been the captain of his own starship known as the Rack ‘n’ Ruin. He’s a talking raccoon who acts as a space hero. What’s not to love?

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog may have originated in a video game series, but he’s definitely a superhero. He runs at supersonic speed and has a slew of other abilities including his Spin Dash attack, he battles villains, rescues those in need, and even has a sidekick. Sonic is such a fun character that he’s starred in video games, TV series, movies, comic books, and even tabletop games. Dr. Eggman, Infinite, and any other baddies better watch out for the world’s fastest hedgehog.

The Legion of Super-Pets

From Krypto the Superdog and Ace the Bat-Hound to Comet the Super-Horse and Beppo the Super-Monkey, the Legion of Super-Pets is chock full of incredible superpowered animals who deserve their own spot on this list. They’re essentially a full Justice League made up of animals, all with tremendous abilities. With B’dg and Ch’p, there are even multiple Green Lanterns on the team. Who would want to be saved by Superman when you could be caught by a flying horse?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

They may be teenagers, but they’re also ninja butt-kicking machines. A mysterious ooze mutated these four turtle brothers and now they defend New York City from the Foot Clan, malicious mutants, and aliens from Dimension X. These pizza-loving heroes have become pop culture staples, appearing in almost every form of media out there from movies and cartoons to video games and stage musicals. Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michaelangelo are all fan-favorite characters who regularly take down evildoers for fun.
