Howard the Duck is one of the most bizarre-yet-entertaining characters that Marvel Comics has ever created. He’s an anthropomorphic talking duck alien from Duckworld, a planet in another universe where intelligent life evolved from waterfowl. He’s a wisecracking and cynical duck who likes to party and save the day from the likes of the evil Thog.
Since Marvel Studios and Disney have made it clear that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will last forever, they’ll need to create movies for just about every character they have. Howard is already featured in the MCU. Voiced by Seth Green, he’s appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Avengers: Endgame. However, he’s only gotten a few minutes of screen time at most. He exists in the MCU as a cameo or a reference at most.
Howard the Duck is such a genuinely entertaining and unique character in the comic books that he needs to have his own movie. Yes, one of the earliest films to be based on a Marvel comic book was 1986’s Howard the Duck, but the movie was panned critically and bombed at the box office. It’s often the butt of many jokes when discussing films and makes it onto a lot of must-watch lists for bad movie nights. It’s also the least successful movie ever put out by Lucasfilm.
It’s about time that our old pal Howard gets a second chance to star in his own movie, this time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Seth Green is a fantastic talent to play him and can absolutely carry a feature length film. The character has already been introduced, so why not use him more?
Howard frequently uses meta humor while he’s adventuring, saving the world, and enjoying a stiff drink. Not only would this blend well with Marvel’s usual sense of humor and even improve upon it, but they could use that to reference the old Howard the Duck movie. It’s safe to say that Marvel fans would appreciate self-referential comedy.

The MCU is an ever-expanding universe of interconnected films and TV series. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ending that series within the MCU, there needs to be a character to carry on the role the Guardians play within the shared movie universe, and Howard would be perfect. Receiving his own spinoff would be a perfect way to keep the same tone in future projects while further exploring that edge of the galaxy.
Since Marvel is now exploring the multiverse with its current and upcoming projects, now is the perfect time to explore Duckworld in another universe. It can be a brand new adventure for our feathered friend while further exploring elements that have already been set up within the larger story.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t coming to a close anytime soon, so we might as well get at least one movie centered on Howard the Duck. How could that not be insanely entertaining? Considering fans would get to see a fun movie and Marvel and Disney would get their money’s worth, it would be a total win/win.
[…] Howard the Duck has had a cameo in each of the Guardians of the Galaxy films (and Avenger Endgame). He’s even voiced by the hilarious Seth Green. It’s time to give him the time in the spotlight that he deserves. With plenty of his own comics and a cult classic movie from the 80s, there’s plenty of material to adapt to give him his own adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. […]
