Franchises ‘Magic the Gathering’ Should Collaborate With Next

The long-running trading card game, Magic the Gathering, has collaborated with several big franchises in recent years. They’ve released cards based on characters, objects, and events from Doctor Who, Stranger Things, My Little Pony, The Walking Dead, The Lord of the Rings, and many other franchises. They have even announced that a collaboration with Marvel is coming soon. With no sign of these successful crossovers stopping anytime soon, it makes one wonder what else will be made into playable Magic the Gathering cards. Here are just some franchises that could work well with the card game.

DC Comics

The DC Universe offers over 80 years of material to pull from for potential Magic the Gathering cards. From iconic characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to perfect vehicle cards like the Batmobile and Invisible Jet, there’s no shortage of card potential in a DC Comics themed set. Batarangs, the Lasso of Truth, and the Green Lantern ring would all make for perfect artifacts. Plus, it would be a ton of fun to mix Marvel and DC cards together into a single deck.

Star Wars

Anyone who says they wouldn’t want to build a Darth Vader commander deck is lying. Between classic Star Wars icons like Luke Skywalker and modern favorites like Din Djarin, there’s a plethora of creature card potential throughout the history of Star Wars. Let’s not forget about the X-Wings, TIE Fighters, and other ships that would be perfect for vehicle cards. Who wouldn’t want to equip a random creature with a Lightsaber artifact card? It’s a no-brainer that Star Wars Magic the Gathering cards would sell extremely well.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

People already make Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles decks using Ninja creatures and Turtle creatures, so it’s clear that there’s a need for TMNT to actually be in the game. In other media, TMNT has crossed over with Ghostbusters, Batman, the Universal monsters, Stranger Things, Power Rangers, Street Fighter, and a slew of other properties. There’s no reason it shouldn’t also crossover with Magic the Gathering. Between the Turtles themselves, Master Splinter, the Shredder, Casey Jones, April O’Neil, and a seemingly endless supply of memorable mutants, they could fuel a whole set’s worth of creature cards.

Power Rangers

With Power Rangers recently celebrating its 30th anniversary and now going in a new direction under Hasbro, it’s the perfect time for a Magic the Gathering collaboration. Wizards of the Coast, who makes Magic the Gathering, also happens to be owned by Hasbro, so it’s bound to happen eventually. The Rangers, monsters, morphers, weapons, and Zords would be more than enough source material for card inspiration.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog also celebrated its 30th anniversary recently, and has been franchised more than ever. There are now live action movies, several TV series, successful video games releasing back to back, and a fan-favorite comic book series. It’s even branched out into the tabletop realm with Sonic the Hedgehog: Crash Course. It’s only a matter of time before this franchise finds its way into Magic the Gathering. Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, and the rest would all be great fit for commanders. Who wouldn’t want a Chao Garden land card? Of course, collecting the seven Chaos Emerald artifact cards would mean something great for whoever accomplishes it.

Nicktoons

This may be a more out-there choice, but Nickelodeon still loves using their classic Nicktoons like Hey Arnold! and CatDog in their marketing. Even though many of these shows have been off the air for quite some time, it’s still quite easy to find t-shirts, socks, Funko POPS!, and countless other merchandise of Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life, and other beloved Nickelodeon series. If Nickelodeon wants to do more with these titles, a collaboration with Magic the Gathering could be a solid step. Using Reptar to trample through opponents’ creatures or Aang to fly right over them could be a lot of fun.

Nintendo

Nintendo actually started off making playing cards, so it would be quite interesting to see their characters used in a card game. With the likes of Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Samus, and others, Nintendo has a pretty expansive lineup of mascots, all of which would make for heavily sought-after Magic cards. Iconic locations like Hyrule, Dreamland, or the Mushroom Kingdom would be the perfect fit for specialty lands. Is there any gamer out there who wouldn’t want Nintendo Magic the Gathering cards?
