‘Sleepwalkers’: The Wackiest Stephen King Movie

Stephen King has written a lot of stories over the years, and many of those stories have been adapted into movies. There is one movie with Stephen King’s name on it that isn’t adapted from any book or short story, though. That’s because he wrote the script for the film, and that film is none other than Sleepwalkers. Sleepwalkers also happens to be absolutely bonkers.

The 1992 movie focuses on a pair of Sleepwalkers, cat-human shapeshifting creatures, who live by feeding off the life energy of virgin women. Their latest victim gives them a bit of a run for their money, though. This concept seems pretty silly right off the bat, but there are plenty of sci fi flicks with goofy premises but handled quite well and lead to great stories.

The two Sleepwalkers shown in the movie are mother and son, and they’re also lovers. Obviously, this is rather off-putting, and not really in a way horror should. One could argue that it’s because they’re the last two of their species like they hint at during the film, and therefore they only really have each other for mating. There’s some sense there, but it’s still presented in a bizarre way.

The strangeness doesn’t stop there, though. These terrifying-looking Sleepwalkers have telekinesis and can cast illusions, making them rather powerful. Their weakness, however, is cats. Not only can ordinary house cats see through their illusions, but they also violently attack them onsite. Bites and scratches from cats can be lethal to Sleepwalkers. There’s something about evil, powerful monsters being easily taken down by cats that’s just plain hilarious. It’s even funnier to actually see it on screen. Seeing a cat literally jump to the rescue isn’t exactly something one would see a lot in other horror films. There’s a particularly baffling scene later in the movie when cats scratch a Sleepwalker so much that it abruptly bursts into flames.

For more unintentional humor, the filmmakers didn’t have the Sleepwalkers showcase their incredible strength by lifting or throwing a heavy object. Instead, a Sleepwalker kills one of their victims by stabbing them with an ear of corn. This scene took place in a kitchen where they could have used a knife. Instead, they went with something that would look absolutely hilarious sticking out of someone’s flesh and that could never actually penetrate someone’s body in such a way.

There are a slew of other over the top moments throughout the movie that take away from the fear aspect because of how funny or wild they are. Adding to them is how cheap some of the effects look, but it’s hard to hold a low budget against a film.

Stephen King once wrote a story called The Mangler, which was about a laundry machine that came to life and killed people. That strange story was adapted into a feature-length movie starring Robert Englund. While the film is bonkers because the story is about a killer laundry machine of all things, it’s still not nearly as bizarre or wacky as Sleepwalkers.

If you’re looking for a particularly bananas horror flick, definitely give Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers a watch.
