The 10 Most Memorable Deaths in ‘The Walking Dead’ Comic Books

The Walking Dead comic book series ran for a whopping 16 years. Focusing on the zombie apocalypse, characters were killed off on a regular basis throughout the series’ long run. Some of those deaths still sit with readers years later. Let’s see which are the most memorable deaths from The Walking Dead comics.

10) Alpha

Alpha, the menacing leader of the Whisperers, met her inevitable and deserved demise in an unexpected way. She was killed by none other than Negan, one of the biggest antagonists in the whole series. He sliced her thought, silencing the Whisperer for good. This was a true shock, and it served as the major turning point in Negan’s redemption arc. This was essentially how Alpha died in the TV show as well, but it felt heavier and more surprising in the comic book source material.

9) Dale

Dale’s comic book death went to Bob in the TV series, but it’s still a surprise to see either of them play out. While his own leg is being eaten by cannibals, he reveals that he’s been bitten by a zombie as he shouts “Tainted Meat!” like a mad man. He gets the last laugh, and it’s glorious. Dale was a fantastic character, and it was extremely sad to see him go, but he at least gets that one last satisfying moment before he passes.

8) Dwight

Dwight’s death is a simple one, as he gets shot in the head by Rick. That being said, it was the moment and reason that makes it so jaw-dropping, important, and memorable. Dwight, who is one of Rick’s right hand men, wants to resort to violence when disagreeing with the leaders of the Commonwealth. Rick wants to negotiate the peaceful way and even set up an election. Him offing Dwight to prevent a bigger conflict played a huge role in setting up the end of the series. This death was both shocking and meaningful.

7) Tyreese

For those who haven’t read the comics, Tyreese’s death was given to Hershel in the TV series. The Governor decapitates him with Michonne’s sword. In both versions, it kicks off the epic war for the prison. The difference with the comic book version, though, is that Tyreese was essentially Rick’s go-to, right-hand person at the time. This was a jaw-dropping, major death that no one had expected this early into the run. Tyreese went through a lot before this, so his murder was truly felt by the fans.

6) Carol

Carol doesn’t make it very far in the comic books. She unfortunately lets herself get bitten by a zombie as a form of suicide. She can’t deal with what’s happened to the world and decides to end it all with the help of a zombie chomp. It’s extremely sad, especially when her TV counterpart was able to become one of the most capable characters in the apocalypse.

5) Abraham

Abraham’s death is particularly memorable because it came out of nowhere. It wasn’t during a fight scene or while running from walkers. It was during a conversation about relationships. Then BAM! An arrow gets shot through the back of his head and through his eyeball. The sudden shock and the sadness of losing one of the best characters will stick with fans for quite some time.

4) Lori and Judith

This twofer is especially tragic. Lori survives giving birth only to be gunned down by the Governor’s loyalists. She’s carrying her newborn baby, Judith, at the time. As she falls, dying, she lands on and suffocates the baby. It’s one of the most shocking tragedies of the whole comic run, plus it got the Governor’s people to turn on him and put an end to that conflict. It’s hard to forget something this dark.

3) Andrea

For most of the deaths in The Walking Dead, people are eaten by zombies while on the run or gunned down during a fight. Everyone else has to think about their own survival. They need to get to safety. They need to stop the enemy group or kill the undead. There’s never a time to grieve or bury the lost loved ones. That’s what makes Andrea’s comic book death so special. She gets bitten by a zombie and is slowly dying, but she gets to do so in a comfortable bed in a nice home surrounded by her loved ones. Everyone who cares about her gets to say their goodbyes. It really showed how far the characters and the world had come at that late point in the comics.

2) Rick

Rick Grimes is the protagonist of both main versions of The Walking Dead, so his death would be extremely memorable no matter what. That being said, his death, the scenes leading up to it, and the scenes immediately following it will have any reader crying tears all over the comic pages. It’s a suspenseful moment, with Sebastian Milton shooting him before the Commonwealth election. Rick talks about not being mad, that Sebastian just needed to put the gun down. Then one of the most shocking moments happens with the trigger being pulled. Carl checking on his dad to find Rick as a walker will live rent free in any fan’s head.

1) Glenn

Negan killing Glenn in the lineup is easily one of the most famous deaths in The Walking Dead, and it’s for good reason. The buildup to it, the brutality of one of the most beloved fan-favorite characters getting beaten to death by a barbed wire covered bat, and how evil it makes Negan feel upon introduction all make it disturbing yet brilliant. It’s shocking, gory, tragic, and positively unforgettable.
