Community is probably my favorite TV series of all time. It’s hilarious, uniquely over-the-top, and filled with heart, memorable characters, and one-liners worth quoting. It’s been great to see the show rise in popularity over the years, even after its six season run came to an end. It was an underdog show while it was airing, so any new eyes on it and enjoying it has been a blessing.
With all the attention Community has been getting over the years, one would think that every detail has been spotted and every mystery solved. However, there is one mystery that has yet to officially be resolved. Fans have their theories, but there has still been no official, definitive answer. That mystery is the true identity of the “Ass Crack Bandit.”
In the show, the Ass Crack Bandit was a serial prankster who slid quarters down people’s pants when they bent over. This scoundrel was first mentioned in Season 2 during Annie’s campaign speech for student body president. Then, in Season 5, there was an episode dedicated to finding the culprit once and for all. However, the menace’s true identity was never found.
There are a number of characters who potentially committed the crime, so let’s dive into the list of the most probable suspects.
One major theory, and something that is mentioned by Jeff Winger in the show, is that the culprit was likely a faculty member at Greendale Community College. With how easily they can get around the school, this does make sense. Some may think the Dean might have been the Bandit, as it would be a way for Greendale to gain some attention, but he also wanted Greendale to be seen in a positive light and therefore wouldn’t take that risk.
Other major faculty members include Professors Chang and Duncan. At the time of the Season 5 investigation, Chang had returned to teaching at Greendale after cycling through a variety of roles throughout the series, this time teaching math. With him being a member of the staff and absolutely being someone who would willingly do something so weird for fun, he could have been the Bandit. The only problem is that he would have gotten caught because, while insane, he is also very sloppy.

Duncan, on the other hand, is much more subtle and intelligent. He’s also not the nicest guy and has a crude sense of humor. There’s a really solid chance that it’s been him all along. The only bit of evidence against him being the Bandit is that he wasn’t present for a handful of seasons, but he totally could have done it when he was there.
As for the students at Greendale, there are plenty of more options. There’s Starburns, who is a known criminal who would find the idea of sliding quarters down people’s pants hilarious, but the Season 5 episode that focuses on this issue proves that it’s not him. Plus, he’s someone who wouldn’t want to waste the money.
Any other likely candidate is in the study group. Pierce wouldn’t have had the ability to get away with it without being seen, and would gloat if he actually did it. Troy may find it funny, but isn’t smart enough to avoid getting caught. Shirley wouldn’t have done it, and would have told people to pull up their pants rather than sliding a quarter in them.
The other four, however, could very well have been the Bandit. Jeff is smart and charismatic. He can plan a prank and talk his way out of it. He was also a member of the faculty when the Bandit’s crimes were being investigated. That being said, I don’t see him wanting to do it. I feel like he’d find it a waste of time.
That leaves Britta, Annie, and Abed. For Abed, I feel like it’s not something he’d randomly do. He wouldn’t want to hurt or humiliate someone just because it’s funny. He would, however, copy someone else. So if he did pull any of these pranks, it’s because he wanted to copy the original Bandit, either to make it feel more like a TV episode or because he wanted the group to act a certain way again.
There are many fans online who assume it could have been Britta pulling those pranks. Their reasoning is that she was tired of being made fun of by her friends for “Britta-ing” everything, so she wanted to get revenge and prove that she could successfully pull something off. I think she has a solid motive, and she wouldn’t be on people’s radar and could go unnoticed. That being said, she would probably “Britta” it.
Then there’s Annie, one of the most popular suspects for being the Ass Crack Bandit. The popularity of the theory that Annie did it heavily comes from series creator Dan Harmon joking during a fan Q&A that his theory was that it was Annie. However, he also stated that they wrote it ambiguously to leave room for fan theories. Some folks believe it was Annie so that she could have a big case to solve and prove to those around her that she can solve a big problem. She was the one who brought it up during her election speech. In several episodes, she proved she wanted to be a source of change. Her creating an issue just to be the one to solve it fits her perfectly. She’s also smart enough to pull it off, and she wouldn’t gloat about it like others would.

Could Annie have gotten around the school efficiently enough to perform the prank so frequently, though? Probably not. This leads to the most likely possibility: it was multiple people. Perhaps Professor Duncan started it because he thought it was funny, and it was just a small thing that happened every now and then. It could have been just enough that it ended up being a cause for Annie to use in her speech. Then Annie started to perform the prank to make it more of an issue. The bigger the issue, the better she looks by solving it. Maybe Britta played the prank a couple of times to prove to herself that she doesn’t “Britta” everything. Then Abed followed in their footsteps either because he knew Annie and Britta were doing it and wanted to be included, or he wanted to use it as a reason for the study group to come together to solve.
Either way, while there are plenty of theories that make sense, there’s no way of knowing who it really was. Hopefully, if this Community movie is ever actually made, it may hint at who actually was playing all those pranks. It’ll be one of the many reasons for Six Seasons and a Movie.
