‘The Wonderful 101’: Unite Weapons Ranked

The Wonderful 101 is an underrated gem of a video game that has the player take on the role of one hundred superheroes at once in creative, action-packed gameplay. Part of what makes that gameplay so unique and interesting is the use of Unite Weapons. Using the characters’ “Unite Morphs,” the player can summon a variety of weapons.

While playing through the game, it’s hard not to gravitate using some more than others. Because of this, let’s rank them all. These rankings are based on a mixture of how useful they are in combat, how frustrating or easy they are to draw at a moment’s notice, and how overall cool they are.

12) Drill

Unite Drill is only used in one sequence of the game, and it’s… fine. The fact that the character’s hair becomes the weapon is genuinely awesome, but it’s not the greatest weapon by any means. Sure, you can lunge forward at a single enemy, but that’s it. The game also thinks you’re drawing a circle instead of the swirl needed to use this one. It’s awkward to summon and very situational in battle.

11) Goggles

Unite Goggles is powerful when used against the enemies directly in front of you, but that’s it. Good luck turning to hit anyone else, though. It’s easier to draw than Unite Drill, but still a little awkward. It does, though, represent a character’s arc hitting its most satisfying moment. It’s also a unique idea for a weapon. It’s just not the most useful, and you’re better off using other Unite Weapons during the sequence Goggles is meant to be used for.

10) Bomb

Unite Bomb is pretty cool considering it’s a literal bomb, but it’s surprisingly not for blowing things up. It’s used for slowing down time. It’s slow and awkward for combat, and isn’t used to wipe out enemies. It can be handy to slow enemies down to then strike them with a different weapon, though. It’s also extremely helpful with solving certain puzzles throughout the game.

9) Boomerang

Unite Boomerang should be better and higher up on this list, since it’s really cool, belongs to one of the coolest characters, and is obtained after one of the best character arcs in the game. When used, it can deal a good amount of damage to an enemy at a reasonable distance, but it’s hard to draw and hard to use well. With how little of an opportunity you’re given to use the Boomerang, there’s even less of a chance to try to get it right.

8) Hammer

Unite Hammer is very satisfying to use if you like dishing out big damage with only a couple of strikes. It’s also used for smashing through the sides of ships and buildings to break into them when needed, which is quite nice. However, it’s really slow to use, making it rough in a lot of combat scenarios. Plus, the only other thing it does is push big buttons, but why is a giant hammer needed for that? Couldn’t anyone push a button?

7) Bowgun

The Bowgun has one of the more unique designs and can deal some damage from far away. It also comes with the handy ability to briefly hypnotise certain foes. However, Unite Gun is a much better long-range weapon, and those hypnotised enemies aren’t very helpful and still need to be defeated in the end. This one is the definition of “middle of the road.”

6) Whip

The Unite Whip can tear spikes off of enemies and stage hazards, swing across gaps, and throw objects. It also deals a lot of damage, but to only one enemy at a time. A gigantic whip is pretty cool, and this one has plenty of good uses. That being said, this game is filled with combat scenarios that feature hordes of enemies. Whipping one enemy at a time is very rarely the smart move.

5) Naginata

Unite Naginata is easily one of the coolest weapons in the whole game. It’s also used by an incredible character who the player wouldn’t initially assume is playable, making it all that exciting. Twirling around a giant naginata allows for plenty of foes to be hit at a time while dealing constant damage to them. It also allows you to hover in the air while spinning it, and it can deflect ordnance back at enemies. This would be higher if it weren’t for how great the rest of these are.

4) Gun

Unite Gun is, well, a giant gun. It’s the best long-ranged weapon in the game, can easily hit flying enemies or bosses that are just out of reach, and can pick up explosives thrown by enemies and launch them back. It’s a little too slow to be super viable in most combat, but there are times when it is needed. It does do solid damage, especially once you unlock the Stinger move for it.

3) Sword

What’s cooler than a giant sword? The Unite Sword is long enough to slash through several enemies at once with great speed. It also does a good amount of damage to them. This is one of the weapons you’ll be using most throughout your playthrough. It can also be used as a key to open doors and to deflect laser beams. It’s super useful and super fun to use. The other two higher than this are just that much more fun or useful.

2) Hand

You may think Unite Hand would be a lame weapon since it’s literally just a big hand, but it’s actually awesome. It’s extremely satisfying to punch enemies with a gigantic fist. You can even light the fist on fire which is even more fun. With it being a hand, it can catch things, grab ledges, turn knobs, carry things, and everything else a hand can do, but way stronger. It can even punch through hazards and projectiles.

1) Claw

Unite Claw gives you the feeling of slashing through baddies as if you were Wolverine. Attacks with the claws are so quick that you can spam them and continuously hold enemies in a damage loop, making them completely overpowered. They can also freeze enemies, climb walls and ceilings, and force doors open. Once you unlock Unite Claw, you’d be wise to keep it out whenever you can.
