Sonic Heroes is a 2003 entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It had a lot of similarities to the Sonic Adventure games, but with a bit of a gimmick. Instead of playing as Sonic and his friends individually, the player controlled a full team of three at a time. Each team member filled the role of either Speed, Flight, or Power, with each role having their own abilities and purpose. Team Sonic consisted of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Team Rose was composed of Amy, Cream, and Big. Team Chaotix was Vector, Espio, and Charmy. The members of Team Dark were Shadow, Rouge, and Omega.
It all makes one wonder what more teams there could be if Sega were to ever revisit Sonic Heroes with a sequel of some kind. Using characters from the franchise, let’s explore what some of the possibilities could be.
Team Eggman

Dr. Eggman may be the big bad of the Sonic universe, but he’s been playable from time-to-time. With him being one of the central characters of the series, it would make sense for him to lead a team on an adventure, assuming there’s some new threat that emerges. With his size, and the likelihood he’d be piloting a mech of some sort, he’d be a great candidate for the Power role, with Metal Sonic being the obvious choice for the Speed role. Sonic Frontiers introduced fans to Sage, who has since appeared in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds. With her potentially being used as a series staple going forward, she’d be perfect for the Flight candidate on Team Eggman.
Babylon Rogues

The Babylon Rogues have only been playable in racing games, but they’re already sorted into the class-based system that Sonic Heroes follows. Jet is the Speed expert, Wave handles the Flight, and Storm is the Power representative on the team. Honestly, giving them their Extreme Gear hover boards for their storyline in the adventure would be hilarious and a lot of fun. Their skills are for racing and zooming through the air, and having that as part of a Sonic Heroes game would be wildly entertaining.
Team Cosmic

Silver and Blaze are often grouped together, like in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Team Sonic Racing. It makes sense to do that in Sonic Heroes as well. Silver is from the future and Blaze is from a different dimension entirely. Why not add someone from the past (a.k.a. The “Classic Sonic” side of the canon)? Trip the Sungazer, who was introduced in Sonic Superstars, would be a perfect candidate to round out the team. Someone from the past, the future, and another dimension becoming Team Cosmic would be a lot of fun. Silver would use his telekinesis to fulfil the Flight role, Blaze would be the team’s Speed demon by using her flames to boost ahead, and Trip would be ideal for Power by using her spikey exterior to break objects.
Team Chao

Chao have become a big part of the Sonic lore, with Chao Garden being one of the most requested elements for future games. A lot of fans would love the chance to play as the Chao more. There is a team of Chao playable in Team Sonic Racing, and I think that could translate nicely to Sonic Heroes. Omochao or even the basic Chao would be great as the Flight representative, with Hero Cho being Speed and Dark Chao being the Power. This would easily be the most adorable team in the video game.
Team Classic

Sega loves putting “Classic Sonic” into games as his own playable character, like in Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. If there’s any sort of time travel involved, why not give him his own team? If we’re having classic characters join the fray via time travel, then let’s throw in Ray for Flight and Mighty for Power. They’re fun characters that would work perfectly as a team in Sonic Heroes.
Team Hooligan

Speaking of classic characters and teams, it’s hard not to bring up Team Hooligan. Team Hooligan didn’t get their name until they were used more in the comic books, but they were around in the earlier days of the video game franchise. Fang the Hunter, Bean the Dynamite, and Bark the Polar Bear are all fun characters who deserve more attention. They’re already a team with a name, plus Fang fits Speed, Bean fits Flight, and Bark fits Power pretty easily.
Team Ancient

If we’re talking about time travel, then there are some great, fan-favorite characters worth including, all of which originating from ancient times in the lore. Tikal and Chaos were introduced in Sonic Adventure, and they’re still beloved even though they’ve barely been used since. Emerl, who made his debut in Sonic Battle, and still has a massive fan-base. Bringing them back for a Sonic Heroes sequel could be a good way to explore the mysteries surrounding these characters. Tikal would make for a good Flight character thanks to her spirit orb form. Chaos would be ideal for Power given how strong and durable he is. Emerl can be upgraded to be just about anything, so why not make him fast enough to fill the Speed role? This would surely be a fan-favorite team.
