The Jurassic Park and World film franchise is one of the most profitable in movie history, as well as one of the most entertaining, and easily the greatest dinosaur-centered one ever. The movie series has spawned iconic characters, lines, and moments, all of which will forever be staples of pop culture. Even the ones that aren’t always looked at in the most positive light by fans or critics are still enjoyable.
However, judging by a lot of what has been said about these dinosaur-filled movies online, a lot of folks seem to view them as “just dumb fun.” They claim that they’re great “turn-off-your-brain” or “popcorn movies.” However, I feel like they’re much more than that. They’re originally supposed to be, at least.
The original Jurassic Park is a warning against the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition and playing god. It advises against playing with nature. It also has anticapitalist themes by showing those with power going too far and ultimately meeting their comeupance. The Lost World: Jurassic Park follows that up by further showing the outcome of the disastrous events in its predecessor. One could say the same about Jurassic Park III, but not quite as much, serving mostly as a monster movie with most of the commentary stemming from its relation to the first two.

2015’s Jurassic World explored that same theme a bit, but shifted its focus more to the drawbacks of capitalism. They do this by actually opening the theme park even after everything that went wrong in the original trilogy. There are even moments when characters criticize corporations sponsoring the creation of new dinosaurs. Both of its direct sequels, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion, keep this important theme in mind while also exploring themes like the importance of all life and the darker sides of human greed.
Commentary and important, thought-provoking themes elements that makes the Jurassic films what they are. It’s a vital part of the franchise’s DNA. Yes, there are dinosaurs chomping people off of toilets and hunting people down while a cell phone rings from their stomachs. Sure, there are laser-guided dinosaurs being used as weapons. But these movies are meant to be a mixture of fun and thought-provoking.
It’s one of my favorite movie series, with the original being one of my favorite movies of all time, and that’s because of that perfect blend of commentary and wacky fun. It’s something the likes of RoboCop also does by touching on corruption in a wildly entertaining sci-fi flick.

Obviously, though, you can choose what you get out of it. If you’d prefer to only watch the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies for the action, that’s fine. It’s art; it’s entertainment. It’s meant to be enjoyed in whichever way you want. For me, though, they’re much more than “just dumb fun,” even if those dumb fun moments are there and are entertaining.
