The Muppets have had a long, wonderful history in television and movies. The beloved characters have been featured in a wide variety of movies and series, with some of their biggest theatrical outings being based on classic stories and books. Some of these include The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. They’ve also tackled The Wizard of Oz in a straight-to-cable movie.
It’s no secret that Disney hasn’t done much with the Muppets in recent years, so it begs the question: What other classic stories would also make for great Muppet movies? Let’s take a look at some of the possibilities.
Sherlock Holmes

The Muppets taking on some classic mysteries could be a lot of fun. They could even write their own wacky mystery to solve for it. Obviously, Kermit would be Sherlock Holmes, and Fozzie Bear would make for an amazing Watson. Miss Piggy would be perfect for the one who hires them to solve said mystery while gradually falling in love with the detective. This one is easy-enough to write that it’s actually a mystery as to why they haven’t done it yet.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

For something a bit more on the spookier side of things, there’s always Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Kermi has already acted alongside an evil version of himself in Muppets Most Wanted. That could be the case here too, but with a much bigger, scarier villainous counterpart. Heck, maybe he could transform into Sweetums or Big Mean Carl. The Muppets Haunted Mansion special was a bit of a let-down, so this could fill its place as a go-to annual Halloween watch for households everywhere.
Alice in Wonderland

The folks behind the Muppets could have a lot of fun with something as whimsical as Alice in Wonderland, or Miss Piggy in Wonderland if you will. With so many colorful and iconic characters in the Alice stories from the Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat to the White Rabbit and Queen of Hearts, there could be Muppet actors all over this film who fit perfectly into the world. This would be a wildly entertaining fantasy adventure flick.
Jack and the Beanstalk

Jack and the Beanstalk is a classic fairytale that has been adapted time and time again, but never by the Muppets (outside of maybe a two-minute sketch). Even Mickey Mouse has adapted this one. It’s time Kermit and his friends climb that beanstalk and avoid being captured by a giant Sweetums. Think of the wacky shenanigans the Muppets could face on top of those clouds.
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table

There are more than enough iconic Muppets who could fit the roles of each of the Knights of the Round Table. Putting the likes of Kermit, Gonzo, Rizzo, Pepe, and their friends in their armor would only lead to absolute hilarity. The medieval setting would be a unique one for the Muppets to explore, and while there have already been countless tales told about Arthur and his knights, the Muppets are sure to be especially creative with it. Who doesn’t want to see Animal flailing a sword around?
Avengers

Obviously, this one isn’t a classic tale. It is, however, owned by Disney like the Muppets are. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the most successful franchises in film history. Most people now know at least the earlier MCU movies and the story of The Avengers. A Disney+ special of the Muppets filling the roles of the Avengers would likely crash the streaming service with how many people would flock there to see it. Heck, put that on the big screen and it would definitely make a ton of money. Kermit with Captain America’s shield, Fozzie with Thor’s hammer, Gonzo with Iron Man’s armor, Animal with the strength of the Hulk, Miss Piggy with the weapons and fighting skills of Black Widow, and Scooter with Hawkeye’s bow would lead to big action and big excitement.
Star Wars

This is another that’s not a classic book or fairytale, but it’s a story that everyone knows and loves. It’s also owned by the same parent company. The Muppets have parodied Star Wars in sketches and Jim Henson did make plenty of creatures for the original Star Wars trilogy, so this is a long time coming. Kermit going on Luke Skywalker’s journey and teaming up with Gonzo as Han Solo, Fozzie as Chewbacca, Miss Piggy as Leia, and Bunsen and Beaker as C-3PO and R2-D2 to take on Uncle Deadly as Darth Vader would certainly sell tickets or gain viewers on Disney+. How have they not even thought of this one already?
