Is a New ‘Jurassic World’ Movie Needed?

Jurassic Park hit theaters in 1993 and became one of the biggest and best movies and franchises of all time. The brilliant themes and commentary mixed with the blockbuster dinosaur action makes the series a truly special piece of Hollywood history that can be enjoyed by audiences of all kinds. A new movie is on the way, titled Jurassic World: Rebirth, which will star Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali. It’s a fantastic franchise and those are some big names attached, but is a new Jurassic World film needed?

I’m someone who has enjoyed each entry in the franchise for what they had to offer, and I’ve even defended the more heavily-criticized films. The messages regarding capitalism, playing god, and how humans will inevitably cause their own demise are all especially intriguing. The special effects are incredible, and even revolutionary in the case of the original movie. The action is always exciting. Even the weaker ones still have fun dinosaur-filled moments. Despite all this, I genuinely feel that a new Jurassic World movie is not necessary whatsoever.

The last movie in the series, Jurassic World: Dominion, wrapped the story up quite nicely. All of the characters, new and classic, reached the end of their arcs. They all found a way to live happily ever after, and there were even some answers regarding legacy characters. Of course, it seems as though Jurassic World: Rebirth will focus on brand new characters. This makes sense, but the overall world’s story felt complete as well. Humanity was to live side-by-side with the dinosaurs, and the world’s governments were to discuss how the new global living situation was to be handled on an official level. Dinosaurs now walk the Earth, and humans have to get used to it. Where else can the story go from there without covering a dinosaur apocalypse of sorts?

It also just feels odd that Universal Pictures would still use the Jurassic World title. The original trilogy was called Jurassic Park, and the more recent trilogy was Jurassic World. If there is going to be more with its completely separate story, wouldn’t it make much more sense if they went with a new title? Something along the lines of Jurassic Land or Jurassic Planet would feel more fitting given they’re focusing on a brand new tale.

If Universal is so set on keeping the franchise going, perhaps their focus should be on other forms of media. They have already released a couple of animated TV series as a part of the franchise. More wouldn’t be such a bad thing. There could easily be more done with video games, tabletop games, and comic books. There doesn’t have to be more films for the IP to keep growing.

It’s certainly possible that they might breathe new life into the franchise and tell new, great stories with it. It’s only a matter of time before we find out if a new movie truly feels needed or not. Let’s hope they give us something worth roaring about.
