The 12 Most Iconic Video Game Guns

There’s a long, rich history of long-ranged weaponry in video games. From 2D side-scrollers to 3rd person shooters, guns have been a huge staple of gaming for decades. There are countless virtual firearms in the gaming world. Let’s take a look at which ones have left the biggest impact on video games.

12) Ebony and Ivory (Devil May Cry)

The Devil May Cry series is known for its fast-paced action. This is partly due to Dante’s dual semi-automatic pistols. They rapidly fire upon his foes as he pulls off some incredible acrobatics. They’re also infused with demon magic, which makes them especially cool in addition to being rather stylish.

11) Morph Gun (Jak II and Jak 3)

One of the biggest surprises in a gaming series was the transition between the first two Jak and Daxter games. The setting changes from an ancient fantasy world to a futuristic sci-fi one, and along with the change is Jak receiving the Morph Gun. It added a lot more to what could be done with the gameplay. What’s really cool about it isn’t just that it’s a gun, but it can transform into a variety of types of guns all with different abilities. Adding in the fact that the reward for certain missions is a new attachment for it, it puts a lot of attention on the weapon itself. The transformation ability matches the fantasy and sci fi blend of the franchise.

10) RYNO (Ratchet & Clank)

The Ratchet & Clank series is filled with over-the-top weaponry. The RYNO is probably the most over-the-top in Ratchet’s arsenal. It’s comically massive and blows up just about everything in sight. There is a RYNO in just about every game in the franchise, and it’s essentially the ultimate, heavily-sought after item in each game. It’s always a lot of work to obtain it, but it’s always worth it.

9) Lancer (Gears of War)

The Lancer in the Gears of War series is not only a gun, but it’s also a chainsaw. It’s such a dumb idea that it’s freaking awesome. It’s become a bit of a symbol of one of the biggest shooter franchises out there, and for good reason. The Lancer is one of the more creative assault rifles in gaming, and perfect for taking down hordes of the Locust Swarm.

8) Golden Gun (Goldeneye 007)

One of the biggest multiplayer shooters of all time is GoldenEye 007. The split-screen competitive multiplayer was unmatched. The gunplay was always tremendous fun, but there’s one weapon everyone would fight over, and that’s the Golden Gun. The Golden Gun was a high-risk, high-reward weapon that held one bullet at a time and needed to be reloaded after each shot. However, if you’re able to hit someone with that one shot, you’d get the kill. This one firearm managed to escalate the gameplay of an already great game all on its own.

7) Sasha the Minigun (Team Fortress 2)

Sasha is the name the Heavy Weapons Guy gave to his trusty minigun in the online class-based shooter Team Fortress 2. TF2 is obviously chock full of weapons, from frying pans and broken bottles to grenade launchers and sentry turrets. The one that’s perhaps the most recognizable is the Heavy’s minigun. From the sound it makes to the lines of dialogue the Heavy shouts while firing it, anyone who has played the game would immediately know what it is whenever they see or hear it. Plus, it’s the only gun on this list that means so much to a character that they gave it a human’s name.

6) Samus Aran’s Arm Cannon (Metroid)

Metroid’s Samus Aran is often considered to be the first playable female video game protagonist. This, obviously, makes her an absolute icon. Her entire suit is just as iconic and is super recognizable, and this includes her arm cannon. Built into the right arm of Samus’s suit, the arm cannon can blast aliens away with lasers and missiles. It can also be upgraded over the course of each game. Metroid helped found a whole genre (Metroidvania), so the primary weapon used in such a legendary game would have to be one of the most beloved in all of gaming.

5) Needler (Halo)

Halo changed first person shooters and online gaming forever. As an FPS, it obviously has tons of guns to choose from, but the Needler is probably the one that has bled into greater pop culture the most. Its cool, alien design looks like something pulled out of a classic sci-fi flick. Instead of bullets, it sprays deadly needles that can home in on enemies. It’s also been in every Halo game, making it hyper important to one of the biggest FPS franchises of all time.

4) Gravity Gun (Half-Life)

Gordon Freeman may be skilled with his trusty crowbar, but he’d also be nothing without his Gravity Gun. The Gravity Gun is one of the most creative and diverse guns in all of gaming. Instead of simply firing bullets or other projectiles at enemies, it acts as a magnet, being able to pick objects up and launch them at foes. Half-Life and Half-Life 2 have played massive roles in the evolution of the FPS genre, and the Gravity Gun from them is especially fun to use and is extremely effective during both combat and puzzle-solving. Its use in Gary’s Mod only adds to its uses and wacky potential.

3) The BFG (Doom / Quake)

Doom helped establish the first person shooter genre in the first place, and the franchise has lasted a long time. The BFG, which stands for Big F**king Gun, is easily the most iconic gun in Doom. It’s as massive as its name suggests, can wipe out an entire room of enemies in one shot, and deal an insane amount of damage to a single foe. The gun also appears in Quake, which was developed by the same studio. In Quake, the BFG can wipe out a single target with ease. This entry is easily one of the most powerful on the list.

2) Mega Buster (Mega Man)

The Mega Buster is Mega Man’s primary weapon of choice, which also happens to be a cannon attached to his arm. It’s appeared in every single installment of the long-running platforming franchise, and packs a punch as it launches energy bullets at evildoers. It also gives Mega Man the ability to copy the special weapons of boss robots, making it even more unique and more powerful. A lot of gamers out there have tucked their hand into their sleeve to replicate the Mega Buster at some point when they were a kid.

1) Portal Gun (Portal)

Portal hit the gaming scene in 2007 and quickly became a video game staple. This unique first-person puzzle game, and its sequel Portal 2, offer some of the most unique physics-based gameplay around. That’s heavily due to the one-and-only Portal Gun. Instead of shooting bullets or even focusing on damaging enemies, it launches two portals that allow the player to navigate test chambers in creative ways. It makes the player use their brains while also providing a handy tool for goofing off with. The Portal Gun has since become a symbol of gaming, almost as big as the mushroom from Super Mario Bros., the Master Sword, and the box that Solid Snake hides under in Metal Gear Solid.
