Pixar has announced that Toy Story 5 is in development. Despite Toy Story being one of the best animated movie franchises around, fans feel that the series has run its course. The story has been wrapped up and anymore would be unnecessary.
Toy Story 3 provided the perfect ending, with Woody and the toys saying their final goodbyes to Andy and moving on to a different kid. Toy Story 4 was completely unnecessary after that, but it was at least a great movie and provided another solid ending for the series with Buzz and Woody going their separate ways after all these years. With the toys parting ways from both Andy and Woody, anything else either wouldn’t feel as impactful or would just completely undo the previous two films. The level of emotion in either would be lessened.
Alas, the folks over at Disney want to milk this franchise dry. Because it’s being unnecessarily continued, let’s explore how Toy Story could possibly keep going without undoing anything seen in the previous two movies.
One strong possibility would be to follow the adventures of Woody, Bopeep, Duke Caboom, and the rest of their friends as they help lost and forgotten toys find new homes. This was a strong element introduced in Toy Story 4. Having Woody helping others find what he’s had for years is a touching next step for the character. Plus, characters like Ducky and Bunny were welcome additions, and seeing more of them could be a lot of fun.
Alternatively, the story could instead focus on Bonnie’s current toys and accept the fact that Woody has left for good. Perhaps Buzz Lightyear has taken over as the leader of the toys but feels stuck in Woody’s shadow. Seeing him try to live up to the leader that Woody was while on a new adventure could lead to some emotional growth for the character.

Maybe one of these could be a big screen movie while the other could serve as a Disney+ TV series. Instead, the focus could be on brand new toys altogether, but what would be the point of calling it Toy Story at that point?
Unfortunately, whatever they come up with will likely take away from the previous films, which is a disappointing thought. These stories and characters deserve better than that. Let’s just hope that Toy Story 5 is at least an enjoyable watch regardless of what the premise ends up being.
