The MonsterVerse Title Change That Needs to Happen

The MonsterVerse, the cinematic universe starring the iconic kaiju Godzilla and Kong, has been a lot of fun thus far. Five movies in, and the giant monster combat only becomes more and more fun over time. Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire have all brought something new to the table, whether it be intriguing lore or creative action sequences and monster designs. It will be truly exciting to see what Legendary Pictures does next with the epic science fiction-fantasy franchise.

With the future of the franchise in mind, there is one change involving the naming scheme for the movies that needs to happen going forward. So far, there have been movies like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong. For those familiar with the classic flicks these movies are based on, you’d know that the big ape himself was originally referred to as “King Kong.

Kong has yet to be called “King Kong” in the MonsterVerse, and has so far just been called “Kong.” Many fans assumed that he would beat Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong since the previous film dubbed him Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but that didn’t happen. So, for the next film, he was still just “Kong.”

Now, however, there’s an actual reason to give him the crown and make him King. During the events of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong and Godzilla, with the help of some allies, take on a threat known as the Skull King. The Skull King was the leader of the remaining Great Apes in Hollow Earth who wanted to break into the surface world to take control of that as well.

The Skull King proved to be an admiral foe, but was inevitably defeated by the kaiju tag team of Godzilla and Kong.

With the Skull King now gone for good, Kong took his throne. It seems that he’ll be the new ruler of the Great Apes of Hollow Earth going forward. Because of this, it’s time that the human characters in-universe and audiences finally refer to this version of the character as King Kong. If he’s King Kong in the movies, then the movie titles should represent that as well, like Godzilla and King Kong with whatever subtitle they go with.

For long-time fans of the source material, this is something that should be exciting. It’s honoring the classics in the MonsterVerse’s own way by actually seeing how our loveable ape rose to power. If they don’t use this opportunity to start referring to him as “King” in the movies and in the titles, then it would be a bizarre missed opportunity.
