The ‘Shrek 2’ Video Game Was Better Than It Has Any Right To Be

Shrek 2 is often considered one of the best sequels of all time. It managed to be better-received than its predecessor and is often considered the best in the entire franchise. What folks might not realize, though, is that Shrek 2 was adapted into a video game on the PlayStation 2, XBox, and Nintendo GameCube. This game, simply titled Shrek 2, was far better than it had any right to be.

Movie tie-in video games are almost always terrible. This was especially the case in the early 2000s. Gone were the days of the great movie tie-in games like Aladdin or The Lion King on the SNES. Instead, just about any movie with a young intended audience had a rushed, heartless video game that was made with hopes of making a little extra cash from the property. Shrek 2, however, was a notable standout.

Not only was Shrek 2 one of the few good movie tie-in games from the time, but it’s easily one of the best movie tie-in games of all time. This is thanks to in-depth gameplay, several playable characters, a fun multiplayer experience, and a deeper dive into the world of Shrek set up by the movies.

The Shrek 2 video game allowed one to two players to control Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, Gingy, the Big Bad Wolf, Puss In Boots, and their other friends as they complete various challenges throughout the story of the film. It was similar to the LEGO video games in which players can swap which characters they’re controlling at a moments’ notice, and each character has their own unique abilities and strengths. Some were better at taking out enemies while others were best when platforming or solving puzzles.

The game played really well in general. Kicking a foe as Donkey or slicing them up as Puss In Boots was extremely satisfying, and there were a variety of minigames that shook up the gameplay, as well as each level having a different goal. This being a cooperative game set in the world of Shrek made for some chaotic and wacky multiplayer shenanigans.

It’s clear that the developers treated it like it was any other game, not just a cash grab movie tie-in game. The heart that they put into it is very evident to anyone who has gotten their hands on the game.

The Shrek 2 video game definitely needs to be remade or at least made available for folks to play on modern consoles. The Shrek 2 movie may be a masterpiece, but the video game remains a hidden gem.
