Not only is Mario Kart the most famous racing video game series out there, but even many of its items have become common-day references. People often joke about throwing turtle shells or banana peels on the highway. There are even folks who have gone so far as to cosplay as the blue shell. With items being such an important and iconic part of Mario Kart, it’s hard not to wonder what else from the Super Mario Bros. universe would make for great Mario Kart items. Let’s take a look at some that could work well.
Hammer Bro. Hammer

The Hammer Bros. have been a part of the Mario games for quite a long time, and their hammers are just as classic and recognizable as they are. Super Mario Bros. 3 did offer a power up that allowed Mario to throw it, so why not bring it to Mario Kart as well? It’s a hammer, so giving opponents a big wack if they got too close would make a lot of sense. It could also serve as a lobbed projectile. Banana peel in the way? No problem! Just lob the hammer over it to land your hit on your foe.
F.L.U.D.D.

The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, or F.L.U.D.D., made its debut in Super Mario Sunshine, allowing Mario to wash away toxic slime, soar into the air, hover, run at incredible speeds, and perform other tasks just by spraying water. It’s about time F.L.U.D.D. made a comeback. In Mario Kart, you could strap F.L.U.D.D. on and use it to spray hazards or other racers to push them away from you. Pushing opponents into banana peels or off of ledges would be an entertaining way to get ahead. Spraying a green shell just before it hits you would allow F.L.U.D.D. to be a solid defensive option as well.
Cappy

In Mario Odyssey, Mario throws Cappy onto creatures and objects in order to possess them. Obviously, that ability would detract from the racing experience a little too much. However, Mario does throw Cappy in a circular motion throughout the game. Cappy spinning through the air could make him an interesting item in Mario Kart. There’s already a boomerang in Mario Kart, but Cappy can still offer something unique. Perhaps he can rotate around the player upon being thrown, making him a great short-range option. Timed right, he can take out shells and other hazards. Otherwise, getting close to someone and throwing the spinning hat around you could be a satisfying attack. Perhaps Cappy’s appearance changes based on the character, like taking the form of Peach’s crown or Bowser horns, allowing it to be a particularly unique item.
Magikoopa Wand

There are plenty of items in Mario Kart that launch forward or backward in a straight line, but none are shot in a zigzag motion. People have become experts in dodging just about any item coming their way. It’s time to shake things up with a zigzag projectile, and the Magikoopa Wand is perfect for that. The shapes it shoots out could rapidly float back and forth, making the projectile more unpredictable and harder to avoid. It probably wouldn’t bounce off of anything for the sake of balance, but this is something that would be simple-enough that it wouldn’t change the core gameplay and unique enough to be a welcome addition. Plus, it’s an item that has a long history in the Super Mario franchise.
Poltergust

The Poltergust is Luigi’s trusty vacuum that he uses to bust ghosts in that spooky mansion of his. It being a vacuum, it can suck up more than just ghosts. In Mario Kart, the Poltergust could be used to pull objects and opponents toward you. It’s essentially the opposite of the F.L.U.D.D. concept, but it could be equally as useful. Bring enemies that are in front of you in your direction instead of toward the finish line. Move banana peels and green shells in your direction, hitting anyone on the way. Heck, maybe the vacuum can pull in a banana peel and launch it back wherever you’d want it to.
Rock Mushroom

We’ve seen the mushroom, Golden Mushroom, and the Mega Mushroom in Mario Kart games. It’s time to add the Rock Mushroom to that list. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Rock Mushroom is used to encase Mario in a boulder. The same can be done in Mario Kart. The racer using the Rock Mushroom can become a boulder and flatten everyone in their path. Because they’re a boulder rolling along the track, perhaps they get a speed boost for that duration, but turning is a bit more difficult.
There are plenty of directions Nintendo could go with Mario Kart and its items in the future. Perhaps these and more may actually be included in future installments.
