Everyone knows the best part of the Super Bowl is the commercials. Companies pump tons of money into these ads every year, and the results are sometimes some of the most entertaining things on television. Let’s take a look at the best Super Bowl ads from this year.
When deciding on what the cutoff should be for how many commercials to rank, my wife suggested 13 because of Taylor Swift, whatever that means. So here are the 13 best Super Bowl commercials from this year ranked.
13) Mountain Dew: Aubrey Plaza Having a Blast
Aubrey Plaza is famous for her deadpan tone which makes the idea of her “having a blast” despite the lack of expression on her face pretty funny. This paired with the utter wackiness and creative scenarios happening around her, along with a Parks and Recreation reunion, makes for a pretty fun commercial. It’s nothing groundbreaking by any means; just fun.
12) Uber Eats: Don’t Forget
Having characters in a commercial “remember” things about the product is a good way of telling the audience the needed information about it. Having a guy forget how to take a seat is genuinely hilarious. Having celebrities forget that they’ve worked together or that they were once in a famous music group is a fun idea as well. The joke does wear off a bit as the commercial continues though.
11) Doritos: Dina & Mita
Having Jenna Ortega in your ad as she continues to rise in popularity is a smart choice. Having two grannies going absolutely insane for a bag of your chips is an even better one. It’s exciting, funny, and makes the audience curious to try said chips to see what all the hype is all about. That being said, Dina and Mita could have gotten into even more bonkers scenarios on their way to get their Doritos, so the commercial does feel stale by the end.
10) Apartments.com: Jeff Goldblum Speaks with Aliens
The CGI aliens look shockingly great for a commercial about a website that helps you find apartments, and Jeff Goldblum is clearly having fun despite just talking about that website. The aliens bickering about whether or not they need an extra bedroom for in-laws to stay in is a surprising twist that adds a lot of humor. It’s a simple idea, but it’s a good one.
9) CeraVe with Michael Cera…Ve
Most ads for skin lotion try too hard to be edgy and fashionable. This one brilliantly parodies those ads with the use of Michael Cera, someone typically known to be more awkward than to be the kind of heartthrob these commercials usually go for. The clever pun game on top of that takes this to a whole new level of entertaining.
8) BMW: Talkin’ Like Walken
It feels like everyone has a Christpher Walken impression. At least they think they do. Christopher Walken must totally have people shouting impressions at him all the time in his daily life. Seeing it play out like this is rather funny. The “other vehicles are just cheap imitations” angle is pretty clever. The bit with Usher at the end is a fantastic stinger to tie it into the big game.
7) T-Mobile: Home Internet Feeling
Seeing the Scrubs guys reunited is always fun, but they’ve already been doing T-Mobile ads for a while now, so this is nothing new. However, they’re still fun to see onscreen, and Jason Mamoa going all in on their shenanigans and even bursting out into song is just surprising enough to be hilarious. This is another that’s not necessarily groundbreaking, but it’s very entertaining.
6) Popeye’s: The Wait is Over
This one has a LOT going for it. Not only is Ken Jeong brilliant, but there’s well-timed slapstick, funny one-liners, and a sci-fi theme that is handled tongue-in-cheek. Ken Jeong freaking out over a Roomba and falling off a scooter offer big laughs, but the “what the f**k” at the self-driving car is almost impossible not to laugh at. While most ads focus on one long joke, this one has several sprinkled throughout without losing any sense in what it’s about or what it’s trying to do.
5) Pluto TV: Couch Potato
There are far too many boring commercials that take place on a farm. This one pokes fun at those snooze-fests and turns the idea into something brilliant. Pluto TV turning folks into couch potatoes because of how much their streaming service has to offer is a good way to market the product. They even go as far as to celebrate being a couch potato. Those of us who are ones know it and are proud. This is the kind of ad that will create in-jokes among friend groups.
4) Reese’s: Yes!
This commercial is the definition of “being extra,” and I’m here for it. The over-the-top reactions to everything are genuinely funny, but what really makes this one fun to watch is that you notice something different every time you watch it. The person jumping back in through the window they jumped out of, the guy casually sitting with an entire grandfather clock wedged on his head, and the hula-hooping dog are definitely the highlights, but there are even more blink-and-you’ll miss-it gags throughout this quick ad. Plus, Will Arnett’s voice over tone has been making modern Reese’s commercials worth watching in general, and this one is no different.
3) State Farm: Like a Good Neighbaaa
The “Jake from State Farm” bit has been doing pretty well for a while now. Having the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the role for a big budget action movie is actually a solid idea. A Twins reunion with Danny DeVito makes it even better. Plus, the general poking fun at Arnold’s accent is nothing new, but it still lends itself to some comedy. This one’s a great mix of humorous and exciting.
2) Dunkin’ Donuts: Dunkings
Maybe it’s just because I’m originally from Massachusetts, but this one is an absolute riot. Ben Affleck going full Boston, his buddy Matt Damon being embarrassed by him but still going along with it, and his real-life partner Jennifer Lopez being embarrassed and absolutely not going along with it makes for a wildly hilarious time. The cringey lyrics and dance moves are amazing. How could someone not want one of these jackets? This one could lead to a group Halloween costume with the boys.
1) Paramount+: Mountain of Entertainment
This is the gold standard of what a commercial should be. Not only is it wildly entertaining and insanely quotable, but it also legitimately tells the audience what they have on their streaming service and does so in a fun way. It also serves as a fantastic crossover with the likes of Knuckles, Arnold, Peppa Pig, Master Chief, Lt. Dangle, and others. Plus, there’s great music to boot. This has everything working for it, and it’s worth watching again and again.
