Biggest Snubs of the 2024 Oscar Nominations

The biggest night in Hollywood is quickly approaching, and the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards have been announced. As always, there are some notable absences from the list of nominees. Here are just some of the biggest snubs from this year’s Oscar noms.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem for Best Animated Feature

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is uniquely animated, and it all looks incredible. The film is also heavily about how we should treat everyone equally regardless of how different we may seem. Between the incredible animation and its important message, this should have been an obvious movie to nominate.

The Boy and the Heron for Best Original Score

The Boy and the Heron did get nominated for Best Animated Feature. However, it’s a tragedy that it wasn’t also nominated for its score. The music is just as beautiful as the rest of the movie and helps escalate the emotional aspect of it to whole new levels. It’s easily one of the best scores out of any film that was released in 2023.

Asteroid City for Best Production Design and Best Cinematography

Asteroid City is a truly creative and unique movie. So much so that it was a bit divisive among audiences. That being said, it was beautiful to watch. The shots of the desert scenery are all gorgeous. The sets, which were incredibly built, were filled with detail and helped to tell the story. Asteroid City somehow avoiding any nominations, especially these two, is quite the shocking upset.

Barbie for Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Like the actual Barbie dolls the film is inspired by, the makeup and hairstyling is a huge part of Barbie. It’s part of what makes them Barbies in the first place, and they all have unique styles, all of which adds to their characters and looks great. It’s especially bonkers that Oppenheimer is nominated for this category when every actor just sort of looks like themselves for the most part; no fancy hairstyles or anything. Barbie should have been a shoo in for this category.

Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor in a Leading Role

Two actors received nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon, and both were deserved, but Leonardo DiCaprio somehow avoided a nomination. Not only is he the lead actor in the film, but his performance was fantastic. He played the character of Ernest Burkhart so well that every action he did felt believable. His emotions felt real. It was a stellar-enough performance that he deserved the nomination.

Margot Robbie for Best Actress in a Leading Role

Both America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling received acting nominations for Barbie, but Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, did not. This is just plain baffling. She carried both the humor and the emotional weight of the film. Her performance helped audiences relate and connect with her character. Robbie’s performance is nothing short of tremendous, and her not getting a nomination for it is a head-scratcher.

Greta Gerwig for Best Directing

Barbie is nominated for 8 Oscars, but Greta Gerwig isn’t nominated for directing it. This honestly doesn’t make any sense. It’s an extremely well-crafted film and it’s shot extraordinarily well. She was easily one of the strongest directors of 2023, but the Academy seems to only focus on directors who are men.
