Characters Who Should Be Playable in ‘Mario Kart’

Everyone has a go-to character in Mario Kart. There are so many playable characters in installments like Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that there are multiple characters for any preferred play style. It seems like just about every character in the Super Mario Bros. canon has been playable in Mario Kart at some point. However, that’s not entirely the case. Here are some characters who deserve a spot on the next Mario Kart roster.

Professor E. Gadd

Professor E. Gadd is a wacky old scientist who debuted in Luigi’s Mansion and has played a role in several titles following, including Super Mario Sunshine and the Mario & Luigi series. His inventions have been used in various games, including ones he didn’t even appear in. His strange babble speak could be rather fun to hear as he launches off ramps and zooms around corners. He’s one of the few recurring story-based characters who has never been in Mario Kart, and that’s a crime. There is evidence he was meant to be playable in Mario Kart DS but was scrapped in favor of Dry Bones, so maybe there’s a chance to race as him in the future.

Pianta

These tropical island-dwelling folks would prove to be a solid heavyweight entry to the roster. Debuting in Super Mario Sunshine, the Piantas have been playable in Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Superstar Sluggers, have been seen in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and have been spectators in a couple Mario Kart tracks and in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Even though they haven’t been as important to games as they were in Sunshine, they’ve still had a presence in the series, and it could be a lot of fun to see them playable once again.

Goomba

Goombas are an incredibly iconic part of the Super Mario franchise. They’ve appeared in almost every game, and are the very first enemy you come across in the original game. They’ve been playable in a few games, but never in Mario Kart. There’s the obvious detail that Goombas don’t have hands, but so what? The animation of Goombas either steering with their mouths or their feet, or just having the wheel turn on its own, sounds hilarious and actually kind of awesome. Goomba didn’t have a problem riding a bike in Super Mario Party, so why not drive karts and bikes in Mario Kart?

Boom Boom

Boom Boom is one of Bowser’s henchmen and has been used as boss fights in several of the mainline games. He’s been around for a long time, swinging his fists wildly in the air in attempts to smash Mario, and has been playable in Mario Tennis Aces. It’s actually quite surprising that he has never been playable in a Mario Kart game but the likes of Wiggler have.

Prince Florian

Prince Florian is a newer character to the world of Mario, making his first appearance in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. He is the ruler of the Flower Kingdom and is an ally to Mario and his friends. He’s an absolutely adorable character and a welcome addition to the lineup of characters in the Mario universe. It would be no surprise to see him make future appearances, and in what better title than the next Mario Kart game?

Cranky Kong

Cranky Kong was the original Donkey Kong who threw barrels at Mario in the Donkey Kong arcade game, making him one of the very first characters in the Super Mario lore. He’s since appeared in most Donkey Kong games and even The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He’s been playable at times like in Donkey Kong Returns: Tropical Freeze and has proven time and time again that he’s shockingly spry for an old geezer. With Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, and Dixie Kong all being playable at some point in Mario Kart’s history, it’s tragic that Cranky has yet to join them.

Paper Mario

With the likes of Metal Mario and Baby Mario being playable in several Mario Kart games, there should also be room made for Paper Mario. With Paper Mario starring in his own successful series, he’d even make more sense than Metal Mario. Heck, he makes way more sense than characters who’ve never existed before their Mario Kart appearances like Pink Gold Peach. Seeing his 2D sprite in an otherwise 3D game would be pretty fun visually, similarly to Mr. Game & Watch in the Super Smash Bros. series. Paper Mario would easily become a fan-favorite racer if he were to join the roster of Mario Kart.
