‘Power Rangers’ – It’s Time There Was An Animated Series

Power Rangers has graced television screens for 30 years now. The long-running superhero series, which adapted stock footage from the Japanese series Super Sentai and edited it with American footage, has produced several TV shows, movies, video games, comic books, and more. However, there has somehow never been an animated series of the fan-favorite franchise, and perhaps it’s about time that there was.

It’s obviously always entertaining to see the battles, Zords, and explosions in live action, and it’s even been impressive to see how it’s all done on such a small budget, but that’s what we’ve had for a few decades now. An animated Power Rangers series could offer its own unique spin on it. Animation could add a lot to the monster designs, the giant Megazord fights, the morphing, and more, as it allows for things that aren’t usually done in live action. While live action has plenty of advantages, so does animation. The monsters could actually move their mouths, the action could be bigger and more over the top than before, and the morphing transitions could be integrated into the story more fluidly.

The Power Rangers IP was somewhat recently transferred over to Hasbro. Not only does having a new company taking the reins provide the perfect opportunity for a franchise to be handled in a different way, but Hasbro specifically handles franchises in a way that allows for multiple movies and shows to release around the same time that may not be related. Transformers, for instance, regularly has had live action movies released alongside animated series that have had nothing to do with each other. There’s no reason why Power Rangers can’t be handled in a similar way.

There have been inklings that the franchise will go through a bit of a reboot after Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury and that it will no longer adapt Japanese footage going forward. Instead, it will use all original footage for a change. If that’s the case, then it will truly be the perfect time to go the animation route in addition to more live-action goodness.

There are a lot of directions a Power Rangers animated series could go in. It could adapt the series as is but with minor updates, like how it was done in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, or it could be a whole new series altogether. The possibilities for it are seemingly endless.

There are plenty of fantastic superhero cartoons out there, and Power Rangers should join that pantheon. It’s been 30 years and an animated series has somehow never been attempted. When everything from Ghostbusters to Hulk Hogan has had an animated adaptation, it feels weird that Power Rangers hasn’t yet.
