‘Horrified’: What Themes Can the Tabletop Game Use Next?

Horrified is a cooperative tabletop game that has players work together to save innocent lives from famous monsters. The original edition of the game has the players protecting villagers from the Universal Monsters, like Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The second, titled Horrified: American Monsters, has players saving small town folks from American myths like Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil, the Mothman, and the Chupacabra. There’s now a third installment in the Horrified board game series, and that’s Horrified: Greek Monsters, which features Ancient Greek Threats like Medusa, the Minotaur, Cerberus, and more.

Horrified is such a fun and exciting game, and the various versions changing things up only makes it that much more riveting. If Ravensburger continues releasing games in the Horrified lineup, there’s a number of themes they could include. Here are just some of the spooky monsters and myths that Horrified could tackle in the future.

Classic Slashers

If there’s anything spooky that’s become names like the Universal Monsters, it’s classic horror movie slashers. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Leatherface, and other nightmarish murderers have all become iconic enough to become instantly recognizable. They each have their own rules, lore, and preferred methods of attacking their victims that could be used to make the game quite interesting.

Modern Movie Monsters

There are more modern horror movie villains who are just as scary and well-known enough to catch the attention of fans and gamers alike. Annabelle, the Babadook, the Nun, Jigsaw, Art the Clown, M3gan, Samara from the Ring, and plenty of others have kept many moviegoers up late at night. This list can go on and on, allowing for quite a lot of options to include in a Horrified game. Each of these characters are becoming rather famous in the horror movie community, so it would make sense to take advantage of that.

Kaiju

There are already some fantastic kaiju tabletop games out there, like King of Tokyo. On top of that, kaiju aren’t often seen as scary or related to the horror genre as much these days. That being said, they are still monsters and would be terrifying to come face-to-face with in real life (or to have to fight against them in a game). Godzilla, the Cloverfield monster, Mothra, King Kong, and any of the kaiju on the long list from Pacific Rim together in one game would be a lot of fun. The size of these beasts would allow for this version of Horrified to stand out from any of the others.

Stephen King Villains

The king of horror, Stephen King, has created numerous horror villains and monsters that have become staples of the genre. Pennywise, Cujo, Christine, Gage and Church from Pet Semetary, Jack Torrance or the Twins from The Shining, and a handful of others would make for perfect antagonists in a Horrified game. The author has published dozens of novels and stories, which not only allows for a wide selection for the developers to choose from, but it means that there are plenty of fans who would potentially be interested in checking the game out. Some of these baddies are the spookiest around.
