The New DCU Looks to Have a Confusing Start

The DCEU is being rebooted soon, and will instead be known as the DCU. This seemingly means that DC Comics’ connected movie universe will be receiving plenty of massive changes. With the misses made by the DCEU, a reboot certainly makes a lot of sense and feels needed. That being said, the news regarding the new DCU that is so far known makes it all seem extremely confusing.

Instead of ending one series for good and starting from scratch, it looks as though only some aspects of the previous universe will be rebooted while others will be untouched, according to many of the announcements made by CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

There’s going to be a brand new younger Superman and a new older Batman, but Wonder Woman will remain the same. Gal Godot’s Wonder Woman series is continuing on as if there’s no universal shift. There are TV series releasing for Amanda Waller and the Creature Commandos which will feature the father of Rick Flag, which means that the Suicide Squad films will also remain canon. Movies like Batman v Superman, Man of Steel, and will apparently not. Films like Aquaman and Shazam! are in a bit of a limbo for the time being.

On top of that, characters might not get proper introductions or enough screen time to have fully fleshed-out stories. The new Superman film already has several other heroes being introduced, which may hurt the story for both him and them. There are plenty of folks who just want to go see a Superman movie but may not know these characters or wonder what movie they’re from despite them not being from any yet.

With recasting some characters, keeping some the same, and adding characters that have supposedly been there all along, this is building up to a confusing cinematic mess. It makes it all difficult to keep track of what’s canon and what isn’t. Something like this will be extra confusing to general audiences who haven’t been following all of this news online and aren’t familiar with any of the source material. This could chase audiences away. It goes without saying that people don’t enjoy being confused when trying to keep up with stories they’re following.

With new management and a new direction, DC Comics fans are hoping to see a cohesive shared movie universe based on the source material they love reach a grand scale. However, this new beginning is already off to a potentially rough start. Hopefully everything pans out for the greatest outcome possible and the fans do get something they love that’s well made and well thought-out. Only time will tell if the right moves are being made regarding the DCU.
