‘Arrowverse’ Plot Points That Went Nowhere

With the finale of The Flash on the CW, the Arrowverse canon has officially come to an end. The long-running, interconnected TV universe has provided fans with memorable stories featuring beloved DC Comics characters and riveting action. That being said, while it’s been a truly fun ride, there are some plot points that never quite got the conclusion they needed. The Arrowverse may have been wrapped up, but the below elements were not and may never be.

Solomon Grundy’s Creation

During the second season of Arrow, Oliver Queen faces off against a foe named Cyrus Gold. Comic book fans would recognize Cyrus Gold as the human name of the superpowered zombie Solomon Grundy. The fight between Green Arrow and Gold resulted in Mirakuru being splattered over Gold’s face and in his wounds. He was knocked unconscious when rubble fell on him, and then a close-up of his face shows his skin begin to bubble and turn gray, as if he were about to transform into Solomon Grundy.

However, he’s never seen again either as a human or a giant member of the undead. Why hint at Solomon Grundy if nothing would ever come of it? This was certainly a lame way for a character to receive their first live action adaptation.

Patty Spivot’s Departure

Patty Spivot was a cop at the Central City Police Department and the only other love interest Barry had in The Flash outside of Iris West. She and Barry had great chemistry, and the character was very well-received by fans. After an arc revolving around whether or not Barry should tell her that he’s the Flash, he decides not to tell her and breaks up with her to keep her out of harm’s way. That being said, she discovers that he’s the Flash anyway as she’s leaving on a train to never return to the series. Barry also has plenty of non-metahumans close to him who join “Team Flash” that are consistently in harm’s way, like Iris.

As a talented investigator and crimefighter, Patty would have been a valuable member of Team Flash. There have been times throughout the series when past characters would return to help out. It’s weird that she wasn’t one of them. Instead of telling Barry that she knows he’s the Flash, she just sort of leaves to never be seen again.

The Legends of Tomorrow Are Imprisoned

This one is particularly frustrating. The final season of Legends of Tomorrow introduced the perfect way for the series to end. Each of the Legends had a reason to settle down after their lives of being time traveling superheroes. They were also given a magical pocket dimension where they can always meet each other and hang out regardless of where and when they were so that they didn’t have to say goodbye. It would have been a touching finale that gave closure to the characters. Then they went on one final mission where things didn’t go their way and things were left open before the series was canceled.

The series was left on a cliffhanger that saw the Legends getting arrested alongside Booster Gold (played by Donald Faison) by time police. Also, Sara Lance was getting ready to have her baby, which will now probably be in a time prison. Why leave off on such an unsatisfactory ending when the perfect finale was already set up? Now fans will have to go on without answers.

Painkiller’s New Quest

Khalil Payne, a.k.a. Painkiller, went through more growth and development compared to most other Arrowverse characters. That’s why it’s a huge bummer that his subplot in Black Lightning never got full closure. After the Khalil and Painkiller personalities learned to balance each other out more, he left Freeland on a mission of his own. This was to set up a spin-off series that never got the green light at the CW.

On top of that, it was revealed that his old nemesis, Agent Odell, was actually alive. For a little while, it wasn’t completely known if he survived the wound Painkiller gave him. Toward the end of the series, it was revealed that he’s alive and still up to trouble. It seems that Painkiller is off to battle Odell and other evils that we’ll never get to see.

Oliver and Felicity’s Kids Are On A Mission

Through flash forwards and time travel, fans got to know the children of Arrow’s Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak. In the future, Oliver’s son William is taken. It’s up to Oliver and Felicity’s daughter, Mia (the new Green Arrow) to rescue him. This was also meant to set up a potential spin-off that never happened, so no one will ever find out if Mia will save her brother in the future.

After Arrow ended, Mia made an appearance on The Flash. This would have been the perfect time to end her arc, but they left it wide open instead.

Lala Is Back On The Streets

Lala, also known as Tattoo Man, served as one of the longest-running antagonists of Black Lightning. He was one of the main ganglords wreaking havoc in Freeland and was literally unkillable. He was taken off the streets for a while when the show’s primary antagonist, Tobias Whale, covered him in cement and turned him into a statue. This is a solid way to eliminate Lala since he can’t die. That being said, the final episode reveals that the cement breaks and Lala is able to walk free.

After the four seasons of fighting to protect Freeland from gangs and metahumans, one of the main villains is still out on the streets. Will the battle against Tattoo Man and his gangs ever truly end?

The Elongated Man’s Unsolved Case

Ralph Dibney, who fights crime as the Elongated Man, was a mainstay for several seasons of The Flash. The actor left the show after being fired for posting racist and misogynistic tweets. Because of this, they had to write him out of the show. The Elongated Man may be a superhero, but he’s also a private investigator. He leaves to investigate a case along with his love interest, Sue.

Of course, we never see what comes of his investigation. He doesn’t even show up again to help save the world when it’s in danger. His absence is especially felt when Sue makes future appearances without him. There is one episode when Ralph makes a brief appearance, but his face is deformed to cover up the fact that it’s a different actor. This same episode could have been used to wrap up his investigation since they had someone else playing him. Unfortunately, that case will apparently never be solved.

  1. I think that the Arroverse was quite an ambitious TV projects, but with so many narrative threads criss-crossing and trying to get certain elements / plots together, some of the story threads and subplots felt underwhelming.
