The Biggest Takeaways from the Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer

Illumination recently dropped the second trailer for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie. For those who weren’t sold on the initial teaser trailer, they ensured to reveal lots of details and references to the video games this time around. Let’s take a look at the biggest moments in this newest trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Official Trailer

Donkey Kong and Other Kongs

We knew that Donkey Kong will be appearing in the movie and will be played by Seth Rogen. That being said, it’s still cool to get our first glimpse of him in the film. He’s not the only member of the DK Crew who makes an appearance in the trailer, though. During the colosseum battle between Mario and Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong sits on a throne by Peach and Toad while Swanky Kong, Dixie Kong, and Diddy Kong are all in the stands. Funky Kong is also seen in one of the later scenes in the trailer.

It’s also worth noting that the bridge they fight on resembles the construction beams from the original Donkey Kong arcade game. There are even barrels hanging below it, so perhaps we’ll see them thrown at Mario during this battle.

Hoards of Classic Enemies

In the initial teaser trailer, we see that Bowser has an army of Koopa Troopas at his disposal and some Dry Bones rear their spooky heads. This trailer gives a better look at which classic Mario enemies we can look forward to seeing. Piranha Plants, Shy Guys, Chagrin’ Chucks, Snifits, Goombas, Cheep Cheeps, Swoops, and Bob-Ombs are all revealed to appear in the film to at least some extent. Mario and his friends might have their work cut out for them here.

World Map

A group of Toads look over a map of the various kingdoms. Not only does it resemble a world map that would be seen in a Mario game, but it tells us what sorts of worlds the heroes will travel to throughout the story. One is clearly the Mushroom Kingdom and another appears to be Kong Island. Another looks like a desert island which is likely to resemble the desert levels in the games. One of the islands is likely Yoshi’s Island, which definitely give Yoshi fans something to be excited for. There are two lava-covered islands. One has to be Bowser’s kingdom, which might mean the snow kingdom that Bowser conquered in the teaser trailer. This spells bad news for those penguins.

Platforming Mechanics and Recreated Levels

The filmmakers were clever enough to incorporate platforming mechanics and actual levels from the games. During what appears to be Mario’s training, he dodges fire ropes, falls with donut blocks, and leaps over gaps. In the next scene in the trailer, Mario, Peach, and Toad travel along a bridge with Cheep Cheeps leaping at them from the water which recreates a level from the classic game. Anyone who has played Super Mario Bros. would know exactly how annoying that level is. It’s pretty cool for fans to see the levels brought to life in a new medium.

Power-Ups

Would it have truly been a Mario movie if there weren’t any power-ups? The Tanooki Suit and the Fire Flower are both used and look incredible. Hopefully we get to see more of them and they’re used during any combat scenes. You just know they’re waiting on that Super Mushroom reveal for just the right moment.

Yoshis

Yoshis weren’t previously announced to appear in the movie, but it was a safe expectation since the Yoshis are such an important part of the world of Mario. Perhaps we’ll see Yoshi (the main Yoshi) actually get some screen time as his own character, similar to what’s being done with Toad. If that’s the case, the question would be if there’s a celebrity voicing him or if they’d use the voice recordings from the games (which is what’s done for the newer games).

Mario Kart

The end of the trailer has Mario, Toad, Peach, Donkey Kong, and the rest of the Kongs driving along in Mario Kart vehicles. They likely aren’t racing, so they’re probably just using this as a mode of transportation. Adding to the Mario Kart reference is that they’re driving on Rainbow Road, which has a new incarnation in every Mario Kart game. Also, earlier in the trailer, Peach is seen wearing her modern Mario Kart attire. It would be neat to see some sort of Mario Kart spin-off movie or series where they actually race since they might not be doing so here.
