Here’s the breakdown of the latest news in nerd culture: 

Big Announcements From Disney Investor Day 

Disney recently held their Investor Day, in which they announced quite a lot of projects they are working on. Many of which came as huge surprises. These announcements gave new details on the future of Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming services.

These exciting reveals included approximately 10 Marvel TV series, 10 Star Wars series, 15 Disney live-action, Disney Animations, and Pixar series, as well as 15 Disney Live Action, Disney Animation, and Pixar features all coming to Disney+. This is in addition to more content set to premiere in theaters and on Disney’s TV networks before coming to streaming services. The full list of movies and series announced can be seen here

A New Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series is Speeding its Way to Netflix

Sonic the Hedgehog is speeding back into the spotlight with a brand new 3D animated series coming to Netflix. The streaming giant announced they are making the series based on the super-speedy classic video game mascot on their NX Twitter account. There has not been any other details released regarding the series, but the image they tweeted features a silhouette of the more modern Sonic design, as opposed to his original short and chubby design. 

Netflix has already made an animated series of Castlevania, and have other video game TV series in the works, including Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Resident Evil. It certainly appears that video games will continue to be a source of series for the streaming service. There have already been several animated series based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, so it will be interesting to see what this one will do differently. 

Sephiroth Joins the Battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

During last week’s Game Awards, Nintendo used the opportunity to showcase the reveal trailer of the latest DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The coveted Smash invitation went to none other than Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII

The iconic gaming villain will be playable later this month. We can now experience a battle between Cloud and his archnemesis in Super Smash Bros., so Final Fantasy fans are eagerly awaiting Sephiroth’s release. This is the third character revealed for Fighters Pass Vol. 2, joining Min Min from Arms and Steve from Minecraft. There are still three more fighters to be revealed for this Fighter Pass.
