Questions That Need to be Answered in The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic book series by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, has become one of Netflix’s best shows. It’s suspenseful, action-packed, funny, and heartfelt. Plus,it showcases some of the best characters in modern television. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the show is the feeling of mystery and wondering what will happen next. It seems like every time something is answered, more questions arise. Now that two seasons have passed, there are some burning questions that desperately need to be answered.

What happened to the other 36 children who were born on October 1st, 1989?

The premise of The Umbrella Academy is that 43 babies were born on the same day at the same time around the world from mothers who were not pregnant, Reginald Hargreeves adopted 7 of them, and each of them have superpowers. It seemed like Hargreeves sought after adopting more children, but the mothers didn’t want to give them up, indicating that at least some of the other children survived.

It’s safe to assume that they each have their own superpower, so what are they doing and where are they? The Umbrella Academy went public when they were children, so the world knows about them, but there’s no public knowledge of the other children. Perhaps they have been hiding their powers, are no longer alive, are secretly fighting crime, or are supervillains. It’s a little strange that there has been no news about other superpowered beings anywhere in the world, though. After Season 2 of the Netflix series, we now know about Lila, but that’s it. The rest has to be out there somewhere.

What caused 43 babies to be suddenly born from non-pregnant mothers?

It doesn’t seem there has been any research into why non-pregnant women were giving birth around the world at the same time. It doesn’t even seem like people really know about it, which is odd considering that would likely be all over the news. Either way, it’s something that scientists should have been looking into if they knew about it.

Something mysterious clearly caused this widespread sudden birthing event, but it’s not known what that mysterious something was. Could it have been an experiment gone wrong, aliens, somehow a result of time travel, or did Reginald Hargreeves cause it himself for his own unknown reasons? The reason may not be vital for the story moving forward, but it’s such an odd occurrence that it’s difficult not to wonder what caused it.

How does Carmichael exist?

Carmichael was the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Temps Commission. He’s an intriguing character, as he has extensive knowledge of the Commission’s innerworkings and appears to be up to no good. He also happens to be a talking goldfish in a bowl mounted on a human body. We see how Pogo the talking chimpanzee came to be, but not Carmichael. It certainly makes one wonder how there is a talking fish or how he’s able to control a human body suit. Adding to the mystery of his existence is the question of how a fish was able to climb the ranks of the Commission. It could be that he was a human who had his consciousness put into a goldfish, but why would that ever be needed?

How did Ben die?

This is easily one of the biggest questions in the series. It hasn’t even been answered in the comic books yet. We know that he was killed on a mission when the family was still together, but we don’t know what that mission was or what happened on it. It seems as though the Hargreeves siblings blame each other for Ben’s fate, but we don’t know about any of the mistakes they potentially made. He could have met his end due to the actions of a supervillain, an accident, or those terrifying tentacles that protrude from his chest, but the cause of death has never been mentioned, even during his funeral scene.

Gerard Way has stated it’s something he’d like to explore further in future books, so hopefully we do get to find out soon. Ben’s death appears to be a major event that led to the split in the family, so knowing exactly what happened could be vital for each characters’ arcs.

Are Hazel and Cha Cha alive now that the timeline has been altered?

Cha Cha met her demise when the world first ended in 2019 as she was engulfed in flames. Now that the apocalypse has been prevented, she would theoretically still be alive. Hazel managed to escape the apocalypse in 2019 by time traveling with his new love, Agnes. If that apocalypse was prevented, would he have a need to escape, or would he have been in a position to warn Five of the second apocalypse in the 1960s? He may not have been in the same situation that led to his death at the hands of the Swedes.

Reginald Hargreeves is now alive due to the altered timeline, so it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if that was the case for other characters as well. Plus, Hazel and Cha Cha are one of the best parts of the series, so it would be nice to see them again.

What is Reginald Hargreeves’ ultimate goal?

Reginald Hargreeves has been seen to be up to a lot of mysterious activities in the course of the show. He’s a supergenius who built Grace and experimented on apes, causing Pogo to be sentient and intelligent. He planned deals involving nuclear weapons trade and was a part of a plot to assassinate John F. Kennedy. Oh, it was also revealed that he’s an alien!

He gathered the Umbrella Academy together and raised them, teaching them to fight crime. That being said, he wasn’t the greatest father by any means. What do all of these different experiments and conquests have in common, if anything at all? What are his motives? It’s difficult to tell if he’s up to no good or if he’s genuinely trying to protect the world. He could potentially be orchestrating everything that has happened, but there’s no telling why.

Will we ever see the Umbrella Academy as an actual superhero team?

The Hargreeves siblings, also known as the Umbrella Academy, were a crime fighting team when they were younger before the family split up. We saw this in a brief flashback when they were children preventing a bank robbery, but that’s been it so far. Now we only really see them use their superpowers individually.

Not everything needs to feel like The Avengers or Justice League, but the Netflix show continues to tease us with a superhero team fight. Toward the end of Season 1, most of our beloved characters experience a brief altercation with armed agents in a bowling alley. It was exciting, as we’d potentially finally see them use their powers to fight alongside each other as adults. Instead, Klaus threw a birthday cake and they all fled the battle. Toward the end of the second season, hundreds of agents of the Commission surrounded the Hargreeves siblings ready to fight. This was it; we’d finally get to see an epic superhero team-up as they took on this army. However, they all ran while Vanya took them out with one blast. This was a fine way to end the conflict, but it would have been exciting to see more well-choreographed action first.

Something The Umbrella Academy excels at is showcasing intense fight sequences while upbeat or quirky music plays. These are some of the most fun scenes. When the army of time agents showed up to take on the Hargreeves, the opportunity arose to have the siblings fight side-by-side as a true superhero team, but they didn’t deliver. The show constantly teases us with what could be, but they never actually show how fun it would be to see them in epic combat together. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to experience that before the series comes to a close.

Hopefully The Umbrella Academy will be renewed for a third season so we receive some answers. If you have any burning questions about The Umbrella Academy that you hope get answered in the coming seasons, let me know in the comments.
