It goes without saying that there are a lot of fans who are excited for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releasing in April. There have been two trailers released so far, and both are making the film look like a ton of fun. That being said, when looking at both of the trailers together, there’s one major concern.
The first trailer showcases the brilliant space setting, introduces Bowser Jr. and Rosalina, and hints at what the overall story will be, with the core group travelling to space. However, no Yoshi was shown, which confused a lot of fans after Yoshi was the focus of the first movie’s post-credits scene.
The second trailer, which can be seen here, showcases Yoshi much more. It’s also chock full of exciting details including Mouser, Birdo, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, the t-rex from Super Mario Odyssey, and the Nintendo Super Scope. However, that second trailer is severely lacking in anything having to do with Super Mario Galaxy. There’s no space travel. There’s no Rosalina.

While these two trailers are fantastic, they also feel like they’re advertising two completely different sequels within the same franchise. One looks like a trip through space while the other looks like a trip deeper into the Mushroom Kingdom with a new dinosaur companion. The two stories don’t seem like they’ll mesh super well.
It just feels like there’s a bit too much for one movie to handle. Based on what we’ve seen in these two trailers, they’re trying to tackle Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Wonder, Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 2 all in a single story. This feels like a lot for an hour-and-a-half movie.
Does this mean the new movie will be too stuffed and unfocused? Only time will tell, but it’s an understandable concern based on what’s been shown. One would think they’d take it all slower. Sure, get immersed in this world and have references to all things Super Mario, but perhaps the story of each game should be handled one at a time. Assuming each installment is just as successful as the first, Illumination and Nintendo don’t have any reason to stop adapting Mario games. They can afford to handle one game at a time. Adapt Mario Galaxy, Mario Sunshine, etc. one by one. Even if they end up with a dozen movies, things would feel well-paced and they’d maximize their profits. It would be a win/win.
Maybe the movie will all flow well and not feel overly stuffed. Maybe it will be the Mario Galaxy adaptation fans have always dreamed of. Only time will tell when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters this April.
