‘Masters of the Universe’ Trailer Thoughts

Masters of the Universe is a part of nerd culture that I have somehow had very little exposure to. I’m aware of some of the core elements, and it seems entertaining, I just somehow missed out on watching, reading, or playing anything related to He-Man and his world.

That being said, the thought of a live action film bringing that fantastical world to life is an intriguing one. The first trailer for that movie was released, so let’s take a look at all the details it has to offer for long-time fans and casual moviegoers alike.

Masters of The Universe – Official Teaser Trailer

Starting on Earth

By the looks of the trailer, the movie will have Adam start off on Earth and travel to the fantasy world of Eternia. The characters from the original IP being transported into or out of the “real world” has become a trope in movie adaptations, so it would be understandable for fans to be a little concerned about that. However, my understanding is that Adam’s backstory involves one of his parents being from Earth and the other from Eternia, so this could just be how they’re explaining that detail. Hopefully the movie doesn’t spend too much time in the real world, though.

Eternia and Castle Grayskull

The trailer gives us our first looks at the world of Eternia and at the iconic Castle Grayskull. They both look fantastic, like the audience will truly be transported into this fantasy world. For long-time fans, it must feel special to see this place they love come to life in such a way. I’m looking forward to any worldbuilding the movie offers.

Characters

Fans are also treated to their first look at many of the characters. He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Teela, Roboto, Cringer, Evil-Lyn, Beast man, and others are shown, and they all look awesome. They look like they climbed straight out of the source material. Again, it’s really cool to see an adaptation going out of their way to stay true to the characters and the world.

There’s also a fantastic look at the big bad Skeletor, and he looks incredible. He looks every bit evil and creepy as anyone would hope. A bit of a concern, though, is that Jared Leto is playing him. We don’t hear him speak in the trailer, but will he be doing a Skeletor voice, or will it be his own awkward voice? Either way, the character is definitely at risk of being ruined because of him.

Also worth noting is that Orko appears to be absent. I thought he was more of a main character, so it feels weird to not see him here. Hopefully he wasn’t excluded from the film entirely.

Visuals

This is clearly a CGI heavy film, and that’s okay as long as the visuals look good. Thankfully, everything seen in the trailer looks fantastic. The ships, environments, and creatures look lifelike and the action looks like it will be spectacular.

Action-Packed Fantasy Adventure

Overall, it looks like a fun, action-packed fantasy adventure flick. Sure, there are definitely a couple of things worth being concerned about, but it ultimately looks like a great time at the movies. The trailer certainly made me interested to see the movie despite never having the opportunity to become more of a Masters of the Universe fan already.
