‘Twilight’ Movies Ranked

Something that has become an annual event for some folks when autumn hits is to rewatch the Twilight films. They may be considered schlock by most people, but for fans, the fall aesthetic, vampires, werewolves, and “Hoa Hoa” music really put them in the mood for the season. Because of this, let’s take a look at how each entry in the franchise stack up against each other.

5) New Moon

The second movie in the series, New Moon, is rough to get through. There’s not a whole lot that’s so bad that it’s laughable, and there’s almost nothing in it that’s legitimately good. It’s ultimately pretty boring throughout with a couple of exceptions here and there, like the infamous papercut scene. The movie just uses the same formula as the first movie, but with Jacob as a werewolf instead of Edward as a vampire. For those who unironically love this series, this one also has Bella and Edward separate from each other most of the time, taking away what those true fans want to see. Exposition for the series overall is the only reason not to skip this one.

4) Breaking Dawn: Part 1

Breaking Dawn: Part 1 is almost entirely Bella’s pregnancy. She gets pregnant, we see her life during pregnancy, and then she has the baby, and that’s basically it. It’s a nothing burger of a movie, and it should have just been kept as a single full story with this as the beginning rather than being split into two movies with this as the beginning. There are some decent shots and solid body horror moments. There’s also the scene with Jacob imprinting with, or becoming soulmates with, a newborn baby, which is by far one of the most bonkers and funniest things to happen in these films. The movie doesn’t offer a lot, but what it does offer is entertaining for one reason or another.

3) Breaking Dawn: Part 2

Breaking Dawn: Part 2 has plenty of great shots, some of the best acting in the series, and some genuinely incredible action. It also serves as an excellent ending to the overall story. It’s still evident that Breaking Dawn shouldn’t have been split into two movies, which leads to an awkward opening. Most of the movie is done pretty well and it’s hard not to feel for the characters.

The climax of Breaking Dawn: Part II features an absolutely epic vampire battle. It’s essentially a gigantic war with armies of vampires with several characters meeting their demise. Then, after about twenty minutes of excitement and shocks, it’s revealed that none of it actually happened. It made it all feel like a complete waste of time and that the audience was lied to. It also erased all stakes right at the moment in the franchise when they should be at the highest. It was angering to watch, preventing this one from being higher on this list.

2) Twilight

The original Twilight is perfect for any bad movie night. It’s absolutely hilarious. The acting is outright ridiculous, the background extras are constantly doing something wacky, the dialogue is extremely silly, the effects are cringey, and the entire movie is filmed through an awkward blue filter. It all plays like an unintentional comedy, but it’s still wildly entertaining. For those who unironically enjoy it, this one is also the one that feels the most like a complete, grounded story. Either way, this is the campiest one, and because of that, it ends up being extremely fun.

1) Eclipse

Eclipse, the third movie in the series, surprisingly manages to be unironically good. It’s well shot. It explores the backstories of key characters. It dives deeper into the external conflict outside of the romantic relationships and the shipping. It’s hard not to believe and care about Bella and Edward’s relationship despite the awkward and toxic it feels in the previous films. This movie is also much more self aware, making jokes about whether Jacob ever wears a shirt and the like. Not having David Slade direct the following sequels was a huge mistake, because he clearly knew what to do with the material.
