‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’: Is It Too Soon To Head To Space?

2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie took the world by storm, making over $1 billion at the box office. It obviously grabbed the attention of video game fans, moviegoers, and just about everyone they know, since folks flocked to the theater to see the Italian plumbers on the big screen. It’s no surprise that a sequel to the movie is on the horizon.

Nintendo and Illumination recently revealed the first teaser trailer for this sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Very little is known about the movie, as Monty Mole is the only really new element shown in the brief teaser. However, we can assume that Mario and his friends will be heading to space and that the story will likely adapt the Super Mario Galaxy video games.

This has many fans wondering if it’s too soon in the series to approach Mario Galaxy. There are quite a few reasons they feel this way. For starters, the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy released 22 years apart, with several mainline games and many spin-off or side games in between. Despite the first film touching on many classic Mario games, a lot of folks feel like jumping straight to Galaxy skips over quite a few iconic stories, characters, environments, and other elements.

While this is a gigantic leap into the franchise instead of gradually and naturally building up to what’s next in the series, this doesn’t mean that other games, plotlines, and characters won’t be adapted either in this new movie or a different movie in the future. There’s no hard rule saying that everything must be adapted in the same order the games were released in. If they don’t adapt Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario World now, they could always do so eventually.

What’s weird, though, is more about how this affects the story of the movies. The first film introduced audiences to that particular version of the Mushroom Kingdom. The next natural step in terms of storytelling would be to explore that setting further. We saw it on the surface level, and now we should dive deeper. Instead, the movies are leaving the Mushroom Kingdom right after introducing it, which feels like a wild choice. It feels inorganic to the story by forcing it away from exploring what has been set up.

There’s no way of knowing how it will all play out until the movie actually releases in theaters. They could be mixing in elements from more games than just the Galaxy duology. They could return to the likes of Sunshine or Luigi’s Mansion at any point in the future. They could bring in the likes of Wario and Waluigi in this movie or another one, and it’s safe to say there will be a handful more given how successful the first movie was. Only time will tell. For now, though, it does feel like going to space this soon in the story is a bit too much of a leap.
