Exploring Why ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is Netflix’s Most Watched Movie

The new Netflix movie, KPop Demon Hunters, has taken the world by storm. Audiences and critics agree that it’s an excellent film. It’s become so popular that it’s now the most-watched Netflix original movie ever. It’s genuinely phenomenal and worth all the hype, but there are also great movies on there. Because of this, it’s worth exploring why this one particular has become Netflix’s most-viewed film.

Obviously, it’s heavily due to it being so good. The premise is unique, the animation is beautiful, the action is exciting, there’s plenty of heart, and the songs are super catchy. It’s overall a fantastic movie, and word is being spread about how good it is. Again, though, it’s not the only great movie, so what else would make it so popular?

This might sound weird, but KPOP Demon Hunters is sort of what people have wanted out of Disney that Disney hasn’t been giving audiences for the last several years. The villain isn’t a last minute surprise like in most recent Disney movies. The romantic subplot actually feels organic rather than shoehorned in or even completely absent. The songs are memorable and match the story exceptionally well. There are animal side characters that are fun without being forgettable, annoying, or steal too much of the spotlight. There’s actual heart put into creating this movie. These are all things Disney used to focus a lot more on, but haven’t in a long time.

It’s also a great animated movie in a world where animation erasure is happening more and more at other studios. Disney continuously focuses on replacing their animated classics with weaker live action versions. Dreamworks appears to be following in their footsteps with their live action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, and more will likely be on the way. Warner Bros. has cancelled several animated projects, booted just about all Cartoon Network content from their streaming service, and shut down their Cartoon Network website. Even Netflix themselves laid off a large amount of their animation staff a couple years back. Thankfully, the folks at Sony Animation understand that audiences still want good quality animation.

The songs from the movie have been blowing up everywhere. They’re huge on Tiktok and other social media, and they’ve even become hits on the radio. The music becoming as well-known as other radio hits is extremely helpful for advertising the movie itself.

The movie is also chockfull of representation, which is always good to see. People want to see themselves be represented in movies, and that’s done well and organically in KPop Demon Hunters.

It’s also worth noting that the movie covers a lot of what is currently popular. K-pop itself is a hugely popular genre nowadays, and social media attention plays a large role in the plot. It all feels organic without the story making awkward nods to it. It never feels like older creators trying to stay hip with younger audiences. It’s just enough to keep those younger audiences interested and feeling seen.

KPop Demon Hunters is also a movie that reaches multiple demographics. It’s clearly appropriate for kids and is something kids will love. K-pop is also a subject matter that folks in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties are heavily interested in. Plus, it has the same feel as an old Saturday morning cartoon, something many of us grew up watching. The more demographics attracted to the movie, the more people there are who’ll watch it.

KPop Demon Hunters makes a lot of right decisions when it comes to attracting audiences. When looking at all of this, it’s pretty clear as to why it’s Netflix’s most watched movie. This is something other studios should take note of.
