The Point of ‘Squid Game’ Has Been Lost On So Many People

The television series Squid Game has become a pop culture phenomenon since it made its debut on Netflix. It’s controlled a lot of the online conversation after the release of each of its three seasons, been memed to heck, and has sold tons of merchandise including t-shirts, Funko Pops, and Halloween costumes. It’s an entertaining and thought-provoking show that’s worth all the hype. That being said, the heavy themes seem to be unfortunately lost on so many people.

‘Squid Game’ explores themes of economic desperation, societal inequality, the dark side of human nature, and the harms of capitalism. It’s become clear, though, that a lot of folks focus on the games showcased in the series and how fun the story is instead of what it all means.

This has been seen in several high-profile ways. After the popularity of the series, Netflix created Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality show in which contestants compete in the same games seen in the original show that the characters died during. YouTuber MrBeast also created a reality show in which real people competed in games similar to the show but with rounds and rules that he made up, pitting contestants against each other for money. Video games like Fortnite and Roblox have added game modes for players to compete in virtual versions of Squid Game.

This all completely contradicts the warning signs from the original series. If anything, they’re all ignoring the lessons and relating to the wrong characters in the show. These corporations and rich folks are taking advantage of the working class for their own personal gain. Sure, they aren’t causing deaths like in the original TV show, but they’re still using them for their own greed and showing that it’s okay for people to screw others over for the sake of money.

With that being said, the show is genuinely entertaining, and watching it simply for the fun of the games the characters play still does have value, and it’s hard to blame people who prefer to do so. It’s just a bizarre experience to see the point of Squid Game lost on so many people on such a large scale.
