James Gunn’s Superman will be soaring to the big screen this July. As the highly-anticipated film inches closer and closer to gracing theaters everywhere, the hype is only ever increasing. To further that hype, a new trailer has dropped giving us a better look at what to expect from the movie. Let’s take a look at the trailer, which is linked below, to see what new details it has to offer.
This breakdown will only cover details not shown in the first trailer for the film.
Superman | Official Trailer | DC
Superman as a Character
The trailer gives us more of a sense of Superman’s actual character. As opposed to the previous big screen adaptation of the character that made him seem like he was a dark, gritty, god-like, deity who was perfect 100% of the time, he feels much more human here. He has daily stresses, he wants to do the right thing and struggles to know exactly what makes something right, and he feels like he’s someone who does need help from those around him. He behaves differently depending on if he’s acting as the Clark or Superman personas. Everything about him is extremely comic book accurate, which is fantastic to see.
Lois and Clark/Superman’s Relationship
Based on the conversation in the trailer, it seems as though Lois and Clark are already together and that she already knows that he’s Superman. Many adaptations have them meeting for the first time during their first interview, so this is an interesting way to go about it. It’ll also be nice for the runtime to not get bogged down by Hannah Montana-esque identity antics like in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. It already seems like these two will have fantastic chemistry, which will make it all even better.

Action and Special Effects
We get more of a taste of the action and visual effects used in the movie, and it’s all looking fantastic so far. With so many different superpowers being used from a number of characters, there are a lot of beams, blasts, and explosions, and they all need to look great while also being distinguishable from each other. Thankfully, according to what’s seen in the trailer, it all does. The high-flying action looks like it will be especially thrilling in this movie.
The World’s View of Superman
It looks like the movie will touch heavily on how the world views Superman and how it affects him. Some folks want him to only fight for them, some clearly dislike his actions or choices, and some seem to understand what he fights for. There are clearly a lot of high expectations for him, and some can’t be met if he’s going to be fighting for what he deems right and protecting all of humanity. This can lead to some hard-hitting themes that will allow this to be a thought-provoking film.

Who is Superman Fighting?
Lex Luthor may be the primary antagonist of the movie, but there looks to be a number of foes Superman battles against. The Engineer, who is a member of The Authority, is seen attacking Superman and Krypto in the Fortress of Solitude. There’s also a fire-breathing kaiju, which was seen in the previous trailer. Most interestingly, though, there’s someone in a metallic suit and dome helmet. Apparently they’re called the Hammer of Boravia and are an original character to the movie, but is it possible they’re secretly someone we know from the source material? Is this Lex in a version of his Warsuit? Is this a prototype of Metallo? Some have even speculated that it’s Supergirl. It’ll be a fun mystery to see unfold when the movie releases.
The Kents
Clark’s adopted parents on Earth, the Kents, have more of a presence in this trailer. They seem just as charming, accepting, and supportive as they do in the comic books. They’re a crucial element in Clark’s story and background, so it’s good to see them portrayed here so well with their inspirational talks and endless love and support for their son.
The Justice Gang
This trailer also shows more of the team that’s apparently being called the “Justice Gang,” which includes Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific. They’re sure to add a lot to the story and action, especially since they’re all fun characters in the source material. That being said, I do hope to see them in their comic book attire and on their own outside of this team, because they all do work really well (if not better) as their own solo characters. We’ll see how they’re handled in this universe going forward.
