In 1996, movie theaters were graced with a film that was hilarious, action-packed, memorable, and absolutely bonkers. That film was none other than Mars Attacks!. Based on the Topps trading card series of the same name, Mars Attacks! is a sci-fi comedy directed by Tim Burton about aliens from Mars invading the Earth. The story is told from the points of view of various groups of people and how the invasion affects their lives. While the film wasn’t initially well-received, it has gained a pretty sizable cult following over the years.
It goes without saying that not every movie needs a sequel. Mars Attacks!, however, is the perfect choice to get one. First of all, the 90s movie is wildly entertaining and deserves a sequel for that alone. It’s also worth noting that it’s a fairly harmless property to return to, unlike others that get bastardized by cash-grab sequels and reboots. It’s hard to say a new Mars Attacks! would really bother fans.

Now is the perfect time for a sequel. Warner Bros. and Tim Burton have been working on sequels for other projects like Beetlejuice. With success from those legacy sequels, it would make sense if it eventually led them to making a new Mars Attacks!. Plus, celebrating nostalgic properties is still very much so “in.”
Something that made the original Mars Attacks! special was how it took advantage of some of the biggest stars at the time for both primary characters and cameos. The likes of Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Danny DeVito, Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, and more truly bought the star power. Even the singer Tom Jones played himself. The use of so many well-known celebrities served as part of the joke, and the same can and should be done with a sequel. Enough time has passed that focusing on today’s biggest stars would make more sense and could lead to big laughs. Getting another singer to play themselves, like Rick Astley, could be just as funny.
The original movie also had its share of political commentary, with Jack Nicholson playing the president of the United States who regularly bickers with the violence-hungry military leader. Putting a modern spin on that element of the movie would be a riot. Politics have evolved in… interesting ways, so poking fun at that would be entertaining.
The humor in Mars Attacks! is perfect for satire of the reboot trend in general. Using a reboot to parody reboots is far from nothing new, but it’s something Tim Burton could put a unique spin on and do something fun with it. Mars Attacks! has a niche sense of humor ideal for this type of commentary.

The original movie’s special effects aren’t bad by any means, but they are aggressively 90s. That is where a lot of the charm comes from, but a lot can be done with modern visual effects. With the aliens and their ships, gadgets, and robots, the CGI is an integral part of Mars Attacks!. All of this can look excellent with today’s CGI. Heck, it can even be made to look intentionally campy, which would certainly please a lot of fans.
Regarding the story and what a new movie could actually be about, perhaps all of the Martians weren’t eliminated. Maybe that was just some of them in Mars’s initial attack. Now, thirty or so years later, more Martians have made their way across space to invade Earth once again, and they’ve developed a way to become immune to old people music. The title could simply be something along the lines of Mars Attacks Again! or When Mars Attacks!.

This is one legacy sequel that can be a lot of fun as long as it embraces its ridiculousness. “ACK ACK!”
