Wonder Woman Needs More Representation in Media

Wonder Woman made her debut in 1941, and it goes without saying that she’s become one of the most famous characters in fiction in the years since. She’s one of DC Comics’ staples, being a part of their Trinity, a.k.a. their big three that also features Batman and Superman, as well as a household name and the most well-known female superhero ever. Her incredible presence has left its mark on pop culture forever.

However, she doesn’t get the love from DC that she deserves. Sure, she has always had her own ongoing comic books series, is a core member of the Justice League, has starred in her own live action TV series, two live action movies, and a few straight-to-DVD animated films, but it feels like so little compared to what the other big names get.

Batman and Superman have both starred in dozens of TV series and more than triple the amount of movies Wonder Woman has been featured in. She’s never even had her own animated series, which just about every major superhero has had at some point.

There was going to finally be a Wonder Woman video game, but it was cancelled by Warner Bros. Games. The Guardians of the Galaxy were essentially no-names before their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and yet they’ve since received their own animated series and video game. Green Lantern will soon be getting a second animated series before Wonder Woman gets one. It seems that every superhero is getting attention in the form of cartoons, video games, and other media, except for Wonder Woman. When smaller superheroes are getting more love than the likes of Wonder Woman, there’s a problem.

Wonder Woman is easily one of the biggest and most important superheroes in comic book history, so why is she constantly getting the short end of the stick compared to other characters? Is it because she’s a woman, and looked at as less marketable than her male counterparts in the eyes of DC? If that’s the case, then why would DC greenlight a (fantastic) Star Girl TV series? It doesn’t really add up.

One would think, given how cool the character is and how popular she is in the eyes of fans and casual audiences alike, that Wonder Woman would be getting just as many animated series, movies, and video games as Batman or Spider-Man. Hopefully that will be the case one day. Until then, it’s all just really baffling.
