‘Shrek 5’: The First Look Isn’t as Bad as People Say

After a very long wait, Dreamworks Animation has finally given us our first look at Shrek 5. It looks like we’ll be seeing what the characters are up to now that several years have passed. However, it seems that this teaser has left fans divided, with many being downright outraged by it.

This brief, 28-second video (which can be seen here) essentially just announces that the movie is on the way, shows us the main cast, and that everyone is a bit older, with the kids being grown up now. It also has the characters see the bizarre memes that have been made about Shrek over the years, which is quite funny (and somewhat disturbing in a humorous way). There’s not much to it, which isn’t surprising since the movie isn’t releasing until next year.

What has fans so upset is how the characters look. They’ve been taking to social media to express their outrage, stating that Shrek and his friends look so terrible that it will ruin the movie and hurt the franchise as a whole. Some have even created videos of angry rants lasting much longer than the quick clip itself. These critics have been calling for Dreamworks to change the animation and character design like what was done with the first Sonic the Hedgehog film.

If I’m being completely honest, it’s really not that bad. This backlash is probably one of the most over-exaggerations in movie history. They genuinely look fine.

It’s clear that the characters have aged. Shek has crow’s feet and wrinkles, Donkey has a graying beard and hair plugs, and Shrek and Fiona’s daughter is now a teenager or young adult. It makes sense for the characters to have aged, especially with the story revolving around Shrek and his daughter without having her be a baby for the third time, and these ways of showing that they have aged make sense. People look different as they age, unless they’re Paul Rudd.

Some people have complained that Shrek’s nose is too skinny or that his eyes are too close together. Honestly, so what? That doesn’t make the slight redesign bad. It’s just a tiny bit different. Characters like Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse have been redesigned dozens of times over the years without this much pushback. This Shrek design isn’t even close to the Ugly Sonic one that it’s being compared to.

The animation isn’t bad either, which was something else that has been complained about a strange amount since the teaser’s release. Sure, it’s been updated. It’s a bit more fluid and stretchy like a 3D version of classic animation. It looks pretty cool. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which exists in the same canon as the Shrek films, also received an update in animation style that matches this, and it was praised for it. Why was that considered better when this new film is being updated to match it?

What’s especially annoying about the amount of hate it’s been getting is that it would have gotten just as many complaints if everything was kept the same. The last Shrek film came out 15 years ago, if this animation looked 15 years old, something would be wrong.

People really need to give the movie a chance rather than judging it based on a 28-second clip where the characters look at memes. The 2003 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is often considered a fan-favorite animated series, but it’s very different from what came before it. If the Internet was the way it was now, it would have gotten the same pushback, which feels just plain wrong.

Let’s all wait for the movie to come out, or at least get a full trailer and better look at it before we get overly upset about the fifth film in a series about fairy tales.
