Fans have rallied around Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which dives further into the video game lore more than ever. It’s been very well-received by long-time fans, and part of that reason is that it celebrates the games they love so much. There’s something truly special about seeing Shadow the Hedgehog’s backstory, lines and poses ripped straight from the games, and even familiar locations. One scene in particular that serves as a big reference to the games takes place in Chao Garden, which audiences would definitely recognize from the games. This scene, though, is begging to be discussed.
In the video games, Chao Garden is a fan-favorite element. It’s a side, optional game mode that allows players to travel to the whimsical Chao Garden to raise, customize, and take care of alien creatures known as Chao, as well as have the Chao compete in minigames. It’s especially fun and a fan-favorite part of the video games. It may not have been included in any game in more recent years, but it’s the number one most requested element for future games because of how much fans crave to return to it.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, though, Chao Garden is more of a Chuck E. Cheese’s type restaurant, and the Chao are just people in mascot costumes. While this is a rather funny gag, it’s obviously far from what it’s like in the source material. What could this mean for Chao in the future of the film franchise?
Will the actual, alien Chao never appear in the movies now? If not, that would be incredibly disappointing. With so much of the source material being accurately represented, it would be a bummer to see these fan-favorite creatures handled in such a bizarre way. If the actual Chao do show up at some point, will the characters mention how they resemble the mascots at the children’s restaurant? Maybe their lore would be handled somewhat differently, like the Master Emerald choosing its guardians based on the mascots’ designs.
If Chao are handled differently, it also makes one wonder how Cream the Rabbit would be adapted into the movies. Cream is a friend to all Chao, and has her Chao best friend, named Cheese, by her side at all times. When playing as her in games like Sonic Heroes or Sonic Advance 2, one of her main abilities is sending Cheese forward as a ranged attack. It would feel weird to have Cream appear in the live action movies without Cheese flying around her or resting on the top of her head. If Cheese is there, then the Chao would need to exist outside of these Chuck E. Cheese mascots. It brings up a rather paradoxical question when it comes to creating the adaptation.

Because of this scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there will either need to be a roundabout way of bringing in the real Chao, or they just won’t exist in this particular version. Either of which may lead to a let-down for the fans. Only time will tell how it will all be handled on the big screen, though.
