No, ‘The Batman’ Should Not Be Canon To The DCU

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU is about to take off with Creature Commandos out on Max and the upcoming Superman ready to hit the big screen. This, of course, has fans excited to see how their favorite characters will be adapted in the new movie universe. This is especially the case with the fan-favorite Batman.

There has been some speculation regarding whether or not 2022’s The Batman will be canon to this new universe or if Robert Pattinson should be this universe’s Batman. He is the most recent big screen Batman, and will be starring in sequels. However, these two universes should be kept separate and someone new should take on the role in the DCU.

First off, based on what we’ve seen of the DCU so far, it’s clearly aiming to be a more accurate representation of the comic books. While The Batman is a fantastic film and it’ll be exciting to see where that franchise goes next after The Penguin, it’s another take on the Caped Crusader that’s grounded, gritty, and realistic. The DCU’s Batman should match the comics more with its tone, aesthetic, and fantastical elements, otherwise it wouldn’t really match up with Superman and the other projects.

The rules of each world completely contradict each other. One is filled with superpowered people, aliens, and the like. The other is more about ordinary people doing detective work and fighting for control of a city. The Batman would feel out of place.

The story wouldn’t really add up either. Bruce Wayne’s outtake on the world would have been much different if there were superpowered heroes already protecting civilians. There would have been criminals with superpowers taking part in the gangs’ battle for control of Gotham City. These two universes simply don’t mesh.

The Batman is much better off staying an “Elseworlds” project for DC, rather than being a part of the new, main shared movie universe. That doesn’t mean either move universe is bad by any means. It’s just that they feel different tonally, have different rules, and the stories wouldn’t make sense together.

Let’s hope that whoever is cast as the DCU’s Batman is great and the character and source material are handled well. Let’s also hope that Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise continues to be just as awesome.
