The video game Bugsnax is full of colorful critters, obviously known as “Bugsnax” as the title suggests. However, the townsfolk, known as Grumpuses, are just as delightful and interesting as the titular creatures. Let’s take a look at how each Grumpus ranks among the rest.
14) Clumby Clumbernut

Blumby Clumbernut isn’t present in the game a whole lot. She’s the Journalist’s (playable character’s) boss, and doesn’t seem to want to let them write about anything, even if it’s an exciting story. She also fires the protagonist after everything they went through. She’s not in the game enough to gain any sort of redemption, so she’s basically just the angry boss character.
13) Shelda

Shelda is a rather infuriating character. She claims to be one with “Mother Naturae” and that she speaks for all nature, but is actually one big phony. She even claims that she doesn’t crave the “toxins” that are Bugsnax, but eats them in secret. She spouts a bunch of b.s., and even convinces poor Chandlo that she’s some mystical being. The only reason she’s not on the very bottom of the list is that she’s somewhat redeemed in the Isle of BIGsnax dlc.
12) Gramble Gigglefunny

Gramble has a really sweet demeanor, and even considers Bugsnax to be his friends. He crochets all his own clothes as well as decor for your house. He also gives you the Buggy Ball, one of the more useful gadgets in the game. That being said, he locks Bugsnax in captivity, even after they break out and prove they don’t like that. He’s also incredibly judgemental of others and can be pretty annoying. Worst of all is that he shows his true desires by eating Bugsnax in his sleep, proving that he lies about wanting to eat them.
11) Cromdo Face

Cromdo is a businessman and a con artist. He’s always looking for a way to screw people over for a quick buck. He has even stolen items to sell back to their owners. He’s an absolute scumbag. That being said, he’s a genuinely entertaining character. His shenanigans are hilarious, and his treasure-hunting side quests are a lot of fun. He’s been seen to have a heart (in private), so he’s not really all bad.
10) Wiggle Wigglebottom

Wiggle became a pop music superstar thanks to her hit song. She traveled to Snaktooth Island to find inspiration for new songs, which is a rather interesting motivation. She plays a mean banjo and has a great singing voice (which can even summon one of the boss Bugsnax). However, she screams and sings during regular conversation, which can get rather annoying. Her not being an explorer, scientist, or researcher of any kind means that she does very little to add to the game’s lore. It is nice to see her come to realize that the one she loves is the best muse of all, though.
9) Wambus Troubleham

Wambus is the town’s sauce farmer, providing the player character with any sauce they need during their quests. He gives off strong Nick Offerman vibes with his serious, deadpan demeanor, but he has a big heart. He’s a good husband who loves his wife, Triffany, endlessly. The guy wants to prove his worth and never gives up after failure. He’s a great character, but he shows that he can hold a grudge over the most trivial of things. He also isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
8) Beffica Winklesnoot

Beffica is a gossip queen who’s always on the hunt for juicy details. She has even gone so far as to snoop around the houses of her supposed friends. This is obviously a terrible thing to do, but her quests do allow the player to learn more about the other characters. As annoying and rude as Beffica is, she is genuinely entertaining, like how Cromdo is. She has some rather humorous dialogue. Plus, as the game progresses, it becomes clear that the reason she does what she does is because she’s deeply hurt and has a lot to overcome. Her story is an emotional one.
7) Snorpy Fizzlebean

Snorpy is a technological genius with the ability to build incredible contraptions. He’s responsible for many of the gadgets the player uses throughout the game. It’s hard not to find oneself fighting for Snorpy to admit his feelings for Chandlo. His paranoia and superstitions can be annoying at times, but his anxiety is extremely relatable.
6) Triffany Lottablog

Triffany is an explorer and archaeologist who studies the nature of Bugsnax as well as the history of Snaktooth Island. Her dialogue and side quests help the player learn a lot of the lore behind the island. She’s one of the most sweet and caring characters in the game, giving off the vibes of a loving aunt. Her relationship with Wambus is extremely charming as well. She just needs to learn to work better with others.
5) Elizabert Megafig

Elizabert is the explorer who leads the exposition team to Snaktooth Island. She’s smart, courageous, encouraging of others, and is the reason why the player’s character is there in the first place. She drives the story and serves as the central MacGuffin while also being an interesting character. Learning about her through the other Grumpuses and through her video journal is fascinating. Her romance with Eggabell is absolutely heartfelt. The player unfortunately doesn’t get to see her grow over the course of the game like the others, but she’s still both entertaining and story-important.
4) Floofty Fizzlebean

Floofty is one of the more controversial characters in Bugsnax. They’re a scientist who traveled to the island to study the Bugsnax, how they work, and how they can be used to better Grumpus-kind. They’re one of the most intelligent characters, and despite having a tough exterior, genuinely cares for their brother, Snorpy. What makes Floofty so controversial is their risky experiments. They wish to cut off limbs to see if Bugsnax can help them grow back, and even bite into their own severed leg to see if it later had similar results. It’s understandably off-putting and seems unethical, but their theories do make sense, and they are doing it all for good reasons. They’re undoubtedly one of the most intriguing Grumpuses in the game.
3) Eggabell Batternugget

Eggabell is the town’s doctor, making her crucial to the original expedition. While she did go to the island to serve an important role, she also went there to better herself. She looked down on herself and wanted to be more like Elizabert, and even put herself in danger because of her self doubt. However, watching her grow is truly emotional. The video files give you all the needed backstory for her character, so that when you meet her, you feel like you know her. She’s incredibly relatable and you fight for her to find inner peace. Plus, she’s one of the more plot-important characters and helps save the day in the end.
2) Chandlo Funkbun

At first, Chandlo seems like he’d be the typical muscle-headed “dudebro,” which is far from a fun or interesting character. However, Chandlo is surprisingly one of the best friends anyone could ask for. He’s one of the least toxic characters and is always willing to help those around him. He builds and upgrades your house for you, helps you take on one of the bosses, and plays basketball with you. He has a bit of a complex about not feeling strong enough, but it’s because he wants to be strong enough to protect his boyfriend, which is really sweet. He’s just unfortunately not very bright.
1) Filbo Fiddlepie

Filbo is essentially the main NPC character, and he’s also the best. He was appointed mayor by Elizabert and he just wants to prove himself, despite what others may say about him. He’s super kind, and is always in a chipper mood. He makes the Journalist feel welcome on the island, and just wants everyone he cares about to be happy. He’s the one who fixes the ship to get off the island in the end, and unlike the rest, doesn’t have any personal demons holding him back. Filbo is a loveable fella who’s just trying his best like the rest of us, and for that, it’s hard not to love him.
