Top 10 Bugsnax

Bugsnax is a charming (and surprisingly dark) game in which players track and catch creatures known as Bugsnax that transform parts of characters’ bodies upon consumption. The world is fascinating, and the characters are a delight. Then there are the titular creatures themselves, which are incredibly well-designed. Some are adorable, others are hilarious, and they’re all very genuinely creative. Let’s take a look at the ten best Bugsnax in the game.

10) Strabby

Strabby mostly makes the list because he’s heavily used as the game’s mascot. His simple design of being a strawberry that crawls around tells anyone exactly what they’d find in the game: bugs that are snacks. He’s also especially adorable. The idea of using the leaves as legs is a clever one. Plus, a Strabby in a little hamster ball is one of the most useful gadgets in the game. That being said, he does feel a bit generic.

9) Preying Picantis

Everything about the Preying Picantis is just plain cool. He’s an angry little guy who throws anyone who gets in his way, including other Bugsnax, and deals fire damage in the process. He’s made up of a combination of other Mexican food Bugsnax, which is pretty neat, but burritos and tacos aren’t usually combined to make a different food item, which is the case for other combination-based Bugsnax. Still, It’s entertaining to see him toss other Bugsnax around and to get chased around by him.

8) Sandopede

A centipede that’s also a sandwich is a really fun design. That’s where Sandopede comes in. Each part of his body is a different sliced section of the longer sandwich. The ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles as the filling make him look even more appetizing. He’s one of the stronger Bugsnax who is able to knock others back as he constantly charges forward, and he’s able to climb hills and walls with ease. The only unfortunate thing about Sandopede is that he’s only found in one place in the game despite him not being one of the bosses. Why can’t there be more of this tasty-looking fella?

7) Noodler

Maybe it’s because I really like spicy ramen. Maybe it’s because this is one of the most inspired designs of all Bugsnax. He’s able to float around in lava using his bowl as a boat and chopsticks as oars, but can also walk around on land with those chopsticks as legs. Like the Preying Picantis, he’s also known to throw those in his way and deal fire damage due to his spicy nature. Noodler would be higher on the list if he didn’t make catching other Bugsnax so annoying due to him wanting to throw everything around and lighting you on fire.

6) Daddy Cakelegs

Daddy Cakelegs is one of the boss Bugsnax, and is probably the toughest one to catch. He’s absolutely massive and is super intimidating. He’s so strong he can shatter walls of ice and send the player character flying through the air. The different layers of the cake are used cleverly as different stages of the boss fight, and the birthday candle legs are absolutely brilliant. It also separates into smaller slices of sentient cake. Plus, the name is absolutely hilarious

5) Mothza Supreme

Mothza Supreme is a flying pizza that was clearly inspired by the iconic movie kaiju Mothra. This perilous pizza pie is one of the boss Bugsnax like Daddy Cakelegs. With the abilities to fly, create tornadoes, and spawn pizza bite larva called Bombinos, he’s especially tough to battle and capture. Mothza Supreme also plays a large role in the plot of the game, with it being the first Bugsnak seen, and the reason why the player character’s airship crashed on the island in the first place. Something that’s a bummer with this incredible creature is that by the time you’re able to actually catch him after the fight, he’s just a single, small slice of pizza instead of the whole pie.

4) Charmallow

Charmallow is a firefly that is also a s’more. As a big s’mores fan, that makes me incredibly happy. His body is a toasted marshmallow, his feet are pieces of chocolate, and his wings are graham crackers. It’s all a really creative way to use the different ingredients of a s’more to make a creature. He deals fire damage to replicate the feel of roasting marshmallows over a campfire, which only adds to that brilliance. The “char” obviously stands for their being charred, but it might as well also stand for “charming.”

3) Scorpenyo

Scorpenyo is a jalapeño that resembles a scorpion. It’s one of the more perfect choices for a food/bug combination. He’s a solid mixture of cute and cool, with his small stature, ability to climb walls, and the fact that he loves shooting extra-spicy balls of fire from his tail. As a lover of spicy foods, I can’t help but to love this angry little guy. Plus, his voice is super fun to impersonate.

2) Bunger

Bunger is undoubtedly the one of the most fan-favorite Bugnsax in the whole game. He’s an adorable little cheeseburger with curly fry legs. He doesn’t seem to have a thought in the world as he bounces around looking for delicious ketchup. Fans of the game often find themselves mimicking his voice, saying “Bunger Bunger Bunger Bunger” the way he does in the game. What makes him different from other “aggressive” Bugsnax is that he chases folks down out of love instead of anger, according to the in-game emoticons. He’s a loveable guy who would make for an awesome pet (assuming the end of the game never happens). The BBQ Bunger variant is just as adorable and entertaining.

1) Scoopy Banoopy

Hot take about this rather cold Bugsnak: Scoopy Banoopy is the best in the whole game. First off, he’s a banana split sundae, and who doesn’t love those? He’s made up of other, smaller Bugsnax like how Preying Picantis, but unlike Preying Picantis, Scoopy Banoopy’s smaller parts make sense (being ice cream, bananas, and cherries). He’s big and threatening, as he can toss those who cross his path through the air and even off the side of a mountain, and can also freeze others in their tracks. Despite his large size, his stubby legs are adorable. He’s also more of just a big derp than anything. His silly name and goofy voice make him especially entertaining.
