Apes, monkeys, and gorillas often add a lot of fun and humor to the world of entertainment. It’s no different with video games. Primates have been featured in countless video games over the years, so let’s take a look at the best ones.
10) Bonkers (Kirby Series)

Bonkers is a recurring mini-boss throughout the Kirby video game series. He’s a large gorilla who carries a massive wooden mallet. He relies on brute strength as he battles with his hammer, and has even ridden his hammer like a pogo stick. Each time Kirby faces off against him, it proves to be an especially exciting boss fight.
9) Rilla Roo (Crash Bandicoot Series)

Rilla Roo is a half-gorilla/half-kangaroo hybrid who works for Dr. Dortex and Uka Uka. He’s been playable in games like Crash Bash and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, in which he is a ton of fun to play as. His design is especially unique, even for the Crash Bandicoot games that only feature a small amount of animal-hybrid characters. It is a shame, though, that he hasn’t made as many appearances as the likes of Tiny Tiger or Dingodile.
8) George (Rampage)

Rampage is an entertaining arcade game series in which the player controls kaiju that destroy big cities. The monster that’s presented as the central protagonist in most of the Rampage games is George, a giant gorilla. George excels at smashing buildings, swatting helicopters out of the sky, and devouring civilians. In the original games, George and the other monsters were actually humans who were transformed into kaiju by drinking Scum Soda. He’s much cooler as a giant gorilla though.
7) Agent 9 (Spyro the Dragon Series)

Obviously, it’s always a blast to play as the titular purple dragon in the Spyro games. That being said, the third game in the franchise introduced fans to a handful of other playable characters, one of which was Agent 9. This space monkey uses a laser blaster to zap foes. Fans took to him so much that he was made playable in future installments as well, and each time, he essentially transforms the game into a shooter.
6) Amigo (Samba de Amigo)

Samba de Amigo is a rhythm game that allows gamers to play as a dancing monkey who plays maracas. He’s simply incredible. His name also means friend, so how could you not love him? Sure, his unmoving smile could undoubtedly be seen as creepy, but he’s a dancing monkey in a super fun game, which totally makes up for it.
5) Winston (Overwatch)

There are a lot of playable characters in Overwatch, and Winston is somehow one of the characters who immediately comes to mind when thinking about the game. He’s a super-intelligent, genetically-enhanced gorilla who excels at protecting his teammates. This is one ape you’ll always want to have on your side.
4) Andross (Star Fox)

Andross is the primary antagonist of the Star Fox series. He’s a brilliant mad scientist who was banished from his home planet for his unethical experiments and is responsible for the demise of Fox McCloud’s father. He’s delightfully evil and makes the story of the games much more personal and emotional. He also serves as some especially fun and intense boss battles. If Nintendo gave more attention to the Star Fox series, Andross could have gone down as one of the greatest video game villains ever.
3) AiAi (Super Monkey Ball)

AiAi from the Super Monkey Ball series is easily the most adorable monkey on this list. Always rolling around in a see-through ball, AiAi loves collecting bananas and fighting evil. Despite there being a variety of playable monkeys in the Super Monkey Ball games, he’s the protagonist and is the face of the franchise. He’s even been playable in a handful of Sonic the Hedgehog games. AiAi is so beloved that there’s been a pretty seizable campaign to get him included in the Super Smash Bros. games.
2) Specter and the Pipo Monkeys (Ape Escape)

The Ape Escape series is filled with monkeys causing mayhem. These are probably the games with the most monkeys in them ever. The Pipo Monkeys, enhanced by their Peak Point Helmets, are always trying to take over the world and need to be captured. Their leader, the super-intelligent Specter, is a fearsome threat and can build massive robots. Specter is probably one of the most underrated video game villains of all time.
1) Donkey Kong and the rest of the Kongs (Donkey Kong Series)

The most famous gorilla in gaming is obviously Donkey Kong. DK, Diddy Kong, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, and the rest of the Kongs have all become icons. From throwing barrels at Mario to swinging on vines and fighting evil, Donkey Kong has been a gaming staple for a long time. The tie-wearing ape has starred in a slew of his own games and has been playable in the likes of Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Mario Party, and more. Donkey Kong is one of gaming’s biggest mascots, and for good reason.
Obviously, the other Kongs deserve to be on here too, but they’d end up taking over too much of the list, so that’ll be see in a future post.
