‘Powerless’ Deserved Better

Powerless was a TV sitcom set in the world of DC Comics. Instead of focusing on world-famous superheroes like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, or the escapades of heroes and villains, the show was centered on characters who work for a security company who design and create devices to prevent collateral damage during superhero battles. The unique workplace comedy starred Vanessa Hudgens, Alan Tudyk, Danny Pudi, Ron Funches, Christina Kirk, and some other funny and talented folks.

It was a fun show, but it was unfortunately rather short-lived. It was canceled after just one season. It’s such a shame because the series deserved to last longer than that. It was witty, funny, creative, and had memorable characters. Sure, it may not have been the greatest show around, but the premise was great and clever enough that it deserved to be expanded upon and improved over time.

There are plenty of shows, like The Office, Parks and Recreation, or Community (which Powerless felt a lot like), that took some time to find their footing either after Season 1 or toward the end of it. Powerless was funny, but it did take until the latter half of the season to really get going. Other TV series like this got the opportunity to improve, and Powerless deserved to as well.

It was unfortunately too late for Powerless, since it was forced to end right as it found its footing. It’s truly sad, because there was a lot to like. Teddy and Ron’s wacky antics were wildly entertaining. Van, Bruce Wayne’s cousin, feeling like a failure and trying to live up to the Wayne name and hilariously failing every time was a fun idea. It was hard not to find yourself fighting for Emily’s character or hoping to see Jackie gain some happiness in her life. It was filled with brilliant ideas, which could have led to it becoming a show that’s truly special.

A lot of critics of the series have said that it’s “generic” or “unfunny,” but I disagree. Again, of course it didn’t start off the funniest or most interesting, but that can come over time like it did with other shows. The premise is too good and the actors are too talented for this to have been a single-season flop. Plus, it was a pretty good start. Clips from the show have been making their rounds online with comets praising the jokes, cast, and ideas.

It’s extremely doubtful that Powerless will get a second chance after all these years, but it definitely deserved better than what happened to it.
